I got an error at the configure the package manager usning a mirror when installing the latest Kali Linux on Intel.
Tried both with and without entering proxy details.
I am running on WLAN.

I skipped that part and completed the installation.

What could be the problem and
is it possible to install the packets after the installation is completed?

Thanks

See http://wiki.debian.org/Derivatives/Census/Kali > apt repositories. You need to write those into /etc/apt/sources.list

See http://wiki.debian.org/Derivatives/Census/Kali > apt repositories. You need to write those into /etc/apt/sources.list

How do I do this? Where can I locate those directories and file?

Use this repos and keep sources.list as short and clean as possible, you just need these 2 lines:
http://docs.kali.org/general-use/kali-linux-sources-list-repositories

Use the regular repositories, if you need some more things, use the sources repos and the bleeding edge repos only if you know what you are doing. READ if you need them, there is an explanation about the repos.

To modify the sources.list, use the editor of your choice: nano, gedit, kate, vim, etc....Then delete the lines as needed and put the repos you need, but only the ones you will use.

Luck.

Hello,

I cannot find the file sources.list. that's my main issue right now. I broke open the iso, but I can't find the etc folder. Any direction on this would be greatly appreciated.

The sources.list must be in /etc/apt/sources.list..This file must be created during installation. If the installation package cannot find that file, it will never modify the sources.list and add the mirror:
deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali main non-free contrib
deb http://security.kali.org/kali-security kali/updates main contrib non-free

If not there, create one and add the lines as posted previously.

Use gedit (if gnome) or kate (if kde).

I use nano, it works in any desktop environment.

Then execute this:
aptitude update
aptitude safe-upgrade

Try it.

Ok, so from the beginning do I just start it from Live? Modify the file? Log out and attempt a full install?

Make full installation first and then create or modify sources.list

Do not use graphical install, use text-mode install.

luck.

The problem is that I cannot get a full install completed. It errors on me and I've tried several times. The only way I can do anything is by logging in Live, but that's not what I want to do.

Any ideas where else I could be going wrong?

After installation modify or create if necessary the sources.list, then type aptitude update and then aptitude safe-upgrade

I do not understand, now you post you get an error and it won't let you continue to finish the installation?..Is that so?...

what I mean by full installation is to complete the installation, as you described above....

Are you using the wifi?...Try using the ethernet and retry...If your wifi needs a firmware and you do not have it in an external device (usb), you wont get access to the internet....It could be another issue.

Are you using the install mode? The graphical mode??

Please post how you are trying to install...

At boot, have you tried install mode?..Not graphical.

Can you skeep that step (choosing a mirror) ?

You can install just basic system and then adjust the repos in the sources.list once the system is installed. Then just update and safe-upgrade..

I'd be happy to, if I knew how to skip that step. However, I haven't notice the option? Is there one?

When installing, does it ask for "Choose a mirror" option?...I can't remember that step when installed Kali..I do know Debian squeeze, Wheezy, Jessie does.

Make sure if it asks for mirror and just cancel that step.

Sorry about the fool questions but, have you checked the SHA1?..Did you downloaded from kali?

Are you installing from USB or DVD?...If usb, did you use the methods described in the wiki (dd and winxxx)?

How about partitioning?..how did you partitioned the HD for the kali?

sdse

I will look for that option.

I have not checked the SHA1 because I downloaded it from Kali.

I am installing it from an ISO on Virtualbox.

I partitioned the VHDD how Virtualbox recommended.

Installing on virtual box requires a little but more configuration on your end. Also, there is an ISO specifically for making a VM machine of Kali. Are you using that one? When you are installing you are mentioning that you are running into issues.. Can you tell us what the issues are, and any what specifically are the errors?

Remember Kali is really not made for the beginner level, so keep in mind that it will be difficult like this for many things to come. Might I recommend trying to familiarize your self with another Debian based Linux like Ubuntu or some other user friendly OS, so that you get a ground working knowledge of how the internals work.

Maverik35, You've not replied to my last reply.. Are you out of ideas?

No my dear friend, I have a job to do and a family to share some time with. The rest of my time is not dedicated to myself, I come here to try to help people. Sometimes I have the time, some times I get home tired, but even so, I find some time for helping my community as they did when I started.

Out of ideas?...I don't think so...Sorry about not "following-up" your case.

Try choosing "No" when installation asks for a mirror and go on with the rest of installation. I belive that is what I posted before.

Let me read the whole post and keep the follow up..Next time, remind me by leaving a pm...I have a very bad memory and also I'm helping in other Debian forums.

I'm here and later on over in Debian forums, debian-hardware related forums, etc.

I'll be in touch.

After installation without configuring package manager, restart with your live cd. and go to computer>etc>apt>sources.list file. open the file and write down the contents somewhere exactly as you see in the file. Now restart your pc without the live cd and go to the computer>etc>apt>sources.list file and write down the contents as it were in the live cd sources.list file and save. Now package manager will most probably work (worked in my case).

When experiencing this issue, I managed to solve both errors when configuring the package manager and when installing the grub bootloader by ensuring I had a third partition formatted on my hard drive. So - sda1 - /; sda2 - /boot; sda3 - /swap. After partitioning my hard drive like so my OS configured itself successfully.

(Also, ensuring an ethernet cable is plugged in.)

I've been trying to re install Kali for three days.
I've actually tried everything from editing the source file
A bunch of how to's I could find on the subject on which none worked
I've switched my isp too so it's not a network issue
To fully re installing
Re formatting
Re downloading Kali iso
Nothing
Can't properly install apt
Help me!!!!

Hi all,

I ran into the same problem and I edited source.list :

deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali-rolling main contrib non-free
deb-src http://http.kali.org/kali kali-rolling main contrib non-free

as shown on the live disc session and cleared all other lines. I was then able to run
apt-get update and other upgrade commands that previously did not initiate the downloads.

Those took an hour or so to update etc. then I could access the other packages from the repository??? still new to kali so I am forgiving for the meantime.

hello, once you could apt-get update you will be able to access the whole repository to install data. If you're new to linux, i highly suggest you to learn linux with a more user friendly distro first(focusing on command line work) then when you will feel good, go to kali.
