G'day Guys,

I found the following problem when I tried to install the Kali supplied VM on Workstation 8.

Error Message:

"The configuration file "D:\VMware\kali-linux-1.0-i386-gnome-vm\kali-linux-i386-gnome-vm.vmx" was created by a VMware product that is incompatible with this version of VMware Workstation and cannot be used."

"Cannot open the configuration file D:\VMware\kali-linux-1.0-i386-gnome-vm\kali-linux-i386-gnome-vm.vmx."

"Cannot find a valid peer process to connect to."

The fix is as follows:

Edit the kali-linux-i386-gnome-vm.vmx file,
find the line that starts "virtualHW.version ="
change the version of workstation you are using to 8 (or the relevant VMware Workstation version you are using)

Save the file and retry.

It should now work :)

Cheers
Paul

You can fix this with a small change in the HWversion of the .VMX file. Here's a complete guide: http://cryptedsecurity.com/fix-how-to-install-kali-linux-on-vmware-version-8/
