This has happened before. One time another reboot fixed it. Another time I booted a live OS from USB, researched how to decrypt and mount the encrypted filesystem, get my data off, and do a complete reinstall. Recovery mode is useless because root account is locked. The problem from what I read is a miss configured config file was in the update. Rebooting didn't fix it so it looks like I have to fix it the hard way this time. Is there anything else I can try?
