Have you done this?:

ifconfig wlan0
airmon-ng check kill
ifconfig wlan0 up
airmon-ng start wlan0
airodump-ng wlan0mon

ifconfig should also show wlan0mon now where wlan0 used to be.

did you try
service network-manager restart
then
ifconfig
if new another card appears - it worked

sometimes restarting the network manager allows newly added usb cards to work when they dont after initial install - just a thought that works for me when a card i know works will not initialize

I looked into this, and it is quite possible that this USB adapter does not support certain operations on Linux platforms. Best bet is to ditch D-Link alltogether and go with a TP LINK. I personally use this one and can vouch for it's working right out of the box. I can use aircrack, reaver etc. Good luck.
