Definitely check the output of dmesg, and see what it tells you. Have a look at the appropriate logs in /var/log as well. Anything weird/unexpected showing in ifconfig and iwconfig?

Often times, built-in wireless cards have compatibility issues with Kali. I'd also check your USB wireless card against the list of recommended wireless cards in the forums. You can save yourself a lot of headaches by investing in a compatible card.

Not to be harsh, but as the documentation says, if you're new to Linux, Kali may not be the right distribution for you.
