View Full Version : Impossible to install using an usb keyboard

Hi all,
I am trying to install Kali on a HP Microserver using netinstall image, but I can't. Installer stops in "Choose Language.." screen due to usb keyboard is not detected. I have tried with Sana and Safi netinst iso images ...
And I can't use a PS/2 keyboard because this server only has USB devices ...
Any idea how can I do a clean Kali install with a USB keyboard?

More info:
In BIOS, I have activated USB legacy mode, but it doesn't works. I have tried other linux distros using netinstall iso images provided by them and usb keyboard works without problems: CentOS6 and CentOS7. And my surprise: using kali-linux-1.1.0a-i386-mini.iso, it works also. But is doesn't works for Sana or Safi netinstall iso images.
Then, exists some solution?
did you check SHA1Sum of downloaded image before everything?
how did you make bootable usb?

how is it possible? It works, but your usb image does not work :o

I have verifyed sha1sum in all iso images and all of them are ok.
how did you make bootable usb? with dd for all tests: CentOS, Sana, Safi, Kali 1.1.0a ...

try once again to download Kali image. use this time lite iso img, maybe it could resolve your problem

Using http://cdimage.kali.org/kali-2.0/kali-linux-light-2.0-amd64.iso, keyboard and mouse are detected and all it works ok. But I need to do a customized installation without graphical environment.
Is it possible to launch an "Expert Install" using the light image and install only a base system??

Yes you can:
Download Kali Linux mini ISO (http://docs.kali.org/installation/kali-linux-network-mini-iso-install) and you will start from the scratch.

No, I can't. If you read my initial question I can't install Kali using netinst iso images due to my usb keyboard is not detected by the installer...

Ok, maybe exists another way to accomplish this. Is it possible to modify netinst iso to add usb keyboard driver?? If yes, any howto about to do this??
I rode your post but as it is called " kali mini ISO" i didn't think that you were speaking about it :)
Than you can use live build to create your own ISO adding the driver you miss to the mini ISO.

Uhmm .. I don't see how building a custom live iso can solve my problem. Maybe only if I could configure a preseed file with only base install packages.

did you try in BIOS for some fix. Try to update BIOS or set to their default settings or disable/enable some usb options.
Maybe for some reason it could be helpful.
little investigate this problem how to solve it.

have you accomplished installation? if yes: keyboard still not working then?
have you tried older kali?
i agree it's weird on kali 2.0, on laptop i could use keyboard but not on my pc so i copied and pasted some words before installation (failed later becouse it freezes :D 3 times.. deleted windows without any particular reason) so now i'm thinking about kali 1.1.0a
i've heard old kali was fine, maybe just new one is very broken.. perhaps(?)

JFYI, problem is solved: https://bugs.kali.org/view.php?id=2563, only for safi. Install images needs to load hid-logitech-hidpp module.
