This is the first time I am trying to use Kali Linux. Have previously used Backtrack in VMware.

Downloaded the VMware VM Kali-Linux-2016.1-vm-amd64

while I open the VM in VMWare workstation 8 or VMWare player 6, I get the message

"The CPU has been disabled by the guest operating system. Power off or reset the virtual machine"

Cant think of anything (I am no expert) except that the downloaded file in amd64 and my PC is with intel CPU.

please guide for the resolution of this error.

Go to VMware Home screen
Edit virtual settings > Hardware > Processors
set default values to
No of processors ---- 1
No of core per processors ---- 1
Preferred Mode ---- Automatic

Tick on virtualize Intel and AMD

or reinstall VmWare

Thanks for your reply.

Tried

No of processors ---- 1
No of core per processors ---- 1
Preferred Mode ---- Automatic
Tick on virtualize Intel and AMD (It is virtualize Intel Vt-x/EPT or AMD V/RVI)

On starting up the VM, message says "Virtualized Intel VT-x/EPT requires 64-bit guest support. Continue without virtualized Intel VT-x/EPT"

clicking Yes results in same CPU disable message. Clicking No stops the startup.

Please advise.

You're running older versions of VMWare so try downgrading the hardware compatibility level of the VM.

If that doesn't work, VMWare Player 12 is a free download.
