Ive given up with the pwn pad on my 2012 nexus 7 and installed kali nethunter on android 5.1.1 but i am not able to get wlan1 ( Atheros AR9271) to come up its attached via a y charging cable here is my dmesg output :

I found an article that might provide a solution for you. I will link it at the and, and provide the steps here for your convenience.

1) Add a "non-free" component to /etc/apt/sources.list, for example:

# Debian 8 "Jessie"
deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free

2) Update the list of available packages and install the firmware-atheros package:

# apt-get update && apt-get install firmware-atheros

3) Connect the device to your system. The ath9k_htc kernel module is automatically loaded for supported devices

4) Configure your wireless interface as appropriate.

Meh, that specific adapter should work even without OTG-Y cable... I use it with a standard otg cable. Try that and tell us how it goes.
