I'm very new to linux and I just installed Kali linux 2016.1 on my home PC which is

Pentium IV 3.0 GHz
2 GB Ram
Azus EN 210 - VGA card

It was installed just fine but the OS looks very laggy and not smooth. I didn't installed any driver or anything third party yet. Just the OS.

I'm dual booting it with Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 runs without any lag. Perfectly smooth.

So, any clue why ?

Thanks

With only 2gb ram, you should try kali light. The normal kali use gnome which has higher ram requirement. I suspect your ram is insufficient to run gnome smoothly.
Kali light use xfce, less ram requirement.

aephlux (https://forums.kali.org/member.php?36906-aephlux) ---> i am running one of my kali lappy with 512 MB ram
Its never about ram !!
Linux runs awesome in 512 itself when you are totally on terminal

Its about the kernal version , or un-responsive VGA card or drivers miss installed by installation process (or Faulty recovery)

tharindulucky (https://forums.kali.org/member.php?41079-tharindulucky) go to terminal type this

lspci | grep -i 'vga'

and paste the results here

To ghost.sh: We're not talking about linux with no gui. ofcourse with no graphics you could run linux with just 512mb, try running gnome or even xfce with 512mb and you will see what i mean. Gnome uses about 7-800mb of ram, with only 2gb thats almost half of ram used. p/s your sig is really annoying and it serves no purpose, seriously...an ascii skull? **** :p

To tharindulucky: If u tried kali light and it runs smooth and no lag, then just type in terminal "apt-get install kali-linux-all" to get the rest of the tools/apps.

*** !!
Kali installation guide says minimum requirements as 512 MB of Ram
and peoples who use it as you say they ram magically changes to 7-800 mb
have some sense talking
if it consumes 700-800 MB it wont even install on 512 MB

This forums is not for Making unnecessary talks
as you mentioned my signature is annoying
i am removing it :)

I dont want to talk to one who dont care about the facts

"This however has come at a price – the minimum RAM requirements for a full GNOME 3 session has increased to 768 MB. " from https://www.kali.org/releases/kali-linux-20-released/

Now i know its from kali 2.0 article, but im sure kali 2016.1 uses the same gnome version or higher.

EDIT: Regarding your sig, it was just too long, I was annoyed that i had to scroll down extra because of your long sig. Anyways sorry if i offended you was teasing/joking abt it. :)

My Dear Friend ,

i dont know who uses , Kali in GUI that you are talking about

i am pretty sure Linux runs great with minimal ram

and it effects only the execution rate ! as if i own a theater more seats = more customers = more profit

Hope you understand

and Kali is not my first Unix or Linux Platform

if you still have your own theory go ahead and post & this conversation is done :)

MTeams has stopped upgrading Kali-linux 2016.1R. In every case after upgrade the computer ran extremely sluggish. The Operating system had to be removed and reinstalled.
