I'm trying to use "Prebuilt Kali Linux VirtualBox Image" (2016.1) on my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013) (10.11.3 (15D21)) with Network Wi-Fi - Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (7.21.94.136.1a1) and getting error below while trying to run airmon-ng.

ls: cannot access /sys/class/ieee80211/: No such file or directory

I did some searching and end up installing broadcom-sta-dkms (followed by reboot), however that did not help me resolve my issue(

any advise please?

try with sudo airmon-ng command or under root account.
btw in VM or VB you have a few things to configure in order to normally use it
for example you may need VirtualBox Extension Pack...

I'm already logged in to system as root, so there is no need for sudo.
in regards to VirtualBox, VirtualBox Extension Pack is already installed.

i've always used vmware for tests between airmon-ng start, ifconfig wlan down/iwconfig wlan mode monitor, macchanger -r,iw reg set GY(not BO), aireplay-ng -9 etc.. before discovering fuse, i've been on small screen for few months(silly ain't i?) but with usb adapter(it means an external wifi adapter, not the one inside your laptop.. see http://www.amazon.com/Alfa-Waterproof-Outdoor-wireless-Integrated/dp/B003ILWRLI/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1458427667&sr=8-9&keywords=alfa+network+adapter or even http://www.amazon.com/Docooler%C2%AE-Outdoor-150Mbps-Wireless-Adapter/dp/B00DJ23D3W/ref=pd_cp_147_4?ie=UTF8&refRID=1WZ1F834G9WG2V2Z58HE (your choice, depends on the zone(urban or not) never had problems. maybe all problems are from peeps using internal wifi? happy scanning

TRY TO click at the VMWARE toolbar click at the usb click connect
then iwifconfig you will see your wireless listed.

You might be experiencing trouble because of your wireless card's (or adapter's) chipset manufacturer.
Check out these Aircrack compatibility lists.
https://www.aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=compatibility_drivers
Also, I've never been a Mac user. But by accessing my LAN card through the windows device manager, I'm able to enable or disable IEEE802.11h which is disabled by default.
Perhaps you can translate this bit of analysis over to your Mac's LAN card or adapter.

I'm using VirtualBox (not VMware) & I use wireless).

I'm using VirtualBox on MacOS and perhaps "compatibility drivers" may not apply here (as NIC is being emulated inside of VirtualBox), also I'm not sure how's LAN card relates to wireless and for good or bad MacOS users don't get that kind of option (one can tweak MTU, that's about all).

The video at the bottom of this page (https://null-byte.wonderhowto.com/forum/aircrack-ng-cant-access-ieee80211-0171309/) gave a solution that worked for me. Apparently you have to create a wireless chipset that runs the 802.11 protocol.
