cant seem to find mention of this, and just tried a new download.. downloaded the VM_image 2016.2_64b_VM
boot the OS, run apt/update and apt/dist-upgrade
reboot after its all done
box fails to boot with multiple services failing such as ID,Login,Account,NetworkManager

tried it on my 2016.1 VM same thing
validated my 2016.2 file hash good.

I dont see any chatter on this issue but seems to be "out of the box failure right now?"

running in VMware Workstation as provided and built by the OEM

I can use kernel 4.6 and things are fine again, 4.8 wont boot.

had time to figure it out, I was running apt from X/GUI

with the updates this terminates dpkg and its update process..

simply dumping to another TTY and running dpkg --configure -a, to complete the upgrade after the termination will finish the install and all is happy..

so if your reading this, either do that or think first and dist-upgrade in console TTY and not in X

out of curiosity I dumped x ran dist-upgrade from console and same issues, bricked the boot on 4.8 kernel

-update- rebooted into recovery mode on 4.8 checked if dpkg got messed up .. it didnt, rebooted normal. X loaded with services failing to load couldn't login to X, rebooted a few more times works sometimes and some times not? ...suspicious.

am I the only one with this problem this seems like a major issue.

I have narrowed this to the 4.8 kernel.. I can update everything just fine.. the 4.8 kernel either dumps or hangs other services

I'd report this at bugs.kali.org so the dev team can take a look.

For what it's worth, I'm always a bit nervous before a dist-upgrade...as it can be problematic

Can also confirm 4.8 kernel not booting, hangs after initial boot, heading over to bugs now....
