Hello,
I recently downloaded the Kali Linux VM - first time in a long time that I used Linux at all. I'm outing myself as a newbie here and asking about the windows manager that you see in the '10 years..' video on the kali.org site, about one minute in. On the right hand site are several boxes/windows in something like a side panel. What's that called, how is it called up? I had a look around, found that Kali is using Gnome but I haven't found out what that tool is called or how it's used properly. If someone could point me to a link I'm happy to read and learn by myself.

Thanks for your help in advance!

Can you be more clear what exactly you are asking? Gnome is just a desktop environment of kali more like a theme. Another most popular is KDE.

They are called workspace. Press on that icon with number 2 to call them.

_defalt,
thanks, workspaces is what I needed.

For other newbies - the behaviour of workspaces can be adjusted by using the Tweak tool (in the panel on the left hand side). In the Tweak Tool is an area for the workspaces and Extensions. The 'Workspaces to Dock' extension is very useful to get the workspaces to behave the way you prefer.
