No-root account install and without the penetration testing tools... acceptable? or should be avoided? Details:

Or would Debian testing//SID be the better choice?

Depends on your usage of Kali. Root usage is required for me. Same applies if you are new to Kali and want to learn how the tools work.

If you are new to Linux, I'd start first with another distro (Mint, Ubuntu, etc).

Yes I do keep a USB with Kali installed as well.

Good advice. Used mint many years ago. Had Ubuntu as well for a while. Prefer rolling so best memories were with Arch Linux and Debian SID.

As with all things IT, there are many tools & many ways to do things. My personal view has always been to use the tool best suited for the task at hand. Kali fulfills most of my needs, but I supplement with some other stuff now & then.
