Unable to locate package linux-image-586

I am trying to build a custom kali iso. When I run
/build.sh --distribution kali-rolling --arch i386 --variant mate --verbose i get the error:
Unable to locate package linux-image-586.

Same here. Also tried doing sed -i 's/686-pae/486/g' auto/config too as was mentioned in an old post here: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2267762

Similar error in both cases.

(Running Kali light inside a VM; unam -a says: Linux kalivm 4.9.0-kali3-686-pae #1 SMP Debian 4.9.18-1kali1 (2017-04-04) i686 GNU/Linux)
