Hi,
I downloaded the Kali 2018.1 OVA using the torrent download.
The checksum looks fine:
$ sha256sum kali-linux-2018.1-vbox-amd64.ova
fc8c720284eb5d3e0145b9634c76ef2b7c47d8f46ced683f29 62d8a4f55785ed kali-linux-2018.1-vbox-amd64.ova

(Which matches the checksum on the download page (https://www.offensive-security.com/kali-linux-vm-vmware-virtualbox-hyperv-image-download/)).

I tried loading on my machine running Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS 64-bit, VirtualBox 5.0.40_Ubuntur115130.

And I get the error message:
Failed to import appliance

Any suggestions? Is the OVA file broken?

Thanks!

Have you found a solution? I'm having the same problem, the file is not corrupted.

I have not found a solution yet - I plan to install Kali 2018.1 using the ISO as a VirtualBox VM.

In the meantime, I have been using the hacking labs VM (based off of Kali)

Same problem. Downloaded Kali custom image OVA file ... Running VBox v. 5.2.8 on a Mac.
So .. i click ¨Import Appliance¨, choose the ¨kali-linux-2018.1-vbox-i386.ova¨ file, click “import ” .. everything ok so far, but after 8-10 minutes , i m getting this error message :

<< Could not create the imported medium '/Users/athos/VirtualBox VMs/Kali-Linux-2018.1-vbox-i386/Kali-Linux-2018.1-vbox-i386-disk001.vmdk' (VERR_VD_VMDK_INVALID_FORMAT).

** @ statuc : I have already installed an ISO file (torrent) and it works perfect .

Hi, I have the same issue and was able to use it by first unzipping the ova with 7zip ;-)

I'm having the same issue with the 64 bit .ova downloaded from www.offensive-security.com
I then tried extracting the files, then importing the .ovf into VirtualBox but the same error.

I'm now downloading the 32 bit version and will try that tomorrow.

Is there a disk space quota required in addition to the installation? I am juggling files and often have less than a GB free.

Yes, by extracting the .ova with 7zip, I was able to import appliance. Also, you must tweak your BIOS to enable VT, and Hardware Virtualization Support for multi-core support.
