Booting Kali from an SSD on a Raspberry PI 3 B

Has anyone had any success booting Kali Linux from an SSD? I'm using an Element 14 Pi Desktop case, a Samsung EVO 860 SSD, and the 2018.1 Raspberry PI arm image. When I write the image to the SSD and attempt to boot the OS freezes right after the kernel identifies the SSD. Writing the same image to a microSD card boots fine.

I'm using a Raspberry PI 3 B.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!
