View Full Version : Cannot boot live (2018.1)

I've searched and can't seem to find a fix for this anywhere, so this post is kind of my last resort.
I've got the latest version (2018.1 amd64) and have successfully created a bootable usb drive, but cannot boot kali live at all.
Tried downloading the iso again and used both win32diskimager and rufus. Also tried 2018.1-i836 and 2017.3-amd64 which changed nothing.

I get to the menu (grub) and when I try to boot either live or failsafe it just ends up refreshing the menu and emiting that loud 'beep' sound.
I get to see a couple of messages in the bottom of the screen and another couple which flash too quickly for me to be able to read.

Could be either the kernel or the grub itself in my uneducated opinion.
If anyone will be so kind to help me out, I'd be extremelly grateful.
If need be I'll post my hardware and specs,

Have you checked the hash? What method did you use to put it on the USB?

No I have not checked the hash as I wasn't sure how to do it, but I suspect it wouldn't help. Anyway I'll try that.
I'm not sure what you mean by 'method', I wrote about it in the first paragraph.

EDIT:
There's a simple test I haven't done yet, I'll try with different media and see if it works.

Bad/incomplete downloads are always my first troubleshooting point with Kali. What Mister_X is referring to is taking a SHA256 hash of the ISO you downloaded and comparing it with the hash on the Kali downloads page. If they match, you can be assured your download was complete.

So, as I thought it was something about the (scuffed) flash drive I was using, working now from a different one.

People needs to be careful when formatting and building bootable USB drives.
For example, if you use the same flash-drive to build a Windows bootable USB (and it is still present on it), it is recommended that you use GParted to clean and format the flash-drive, before you build another Linux distro.
