root@kali:~# airodump-ng mon0
Interface mon0:
ioctl(SIOCGIFINDEX) failed: No such device
root@kali:~# airmon-ng start wlan0

Found 2 processes that could cause trouble.
If airodump-ng, aireplay-ng or airtun-ng stops working after
a short period of time, you may want to kill (some of) them!

2580 NetworkManager
12650 dhclient

Interface Chipset Driver

How long has it been since your initial install? Any changes or installation of software other than what is included in Kali?

are you sure wlan0 is the correct interface?.. mine is wlan2. Mine worked straight out of the box great. I just use airmon-ng start wlan2 and then airodump-ng.

If you run airmon-ng, wlan0 is typically your built-in wifi and wlan1 or wlan2 gets assigned to the external usb wifi.

Run just 'airmon-ng' to list your interfaces. It should display your built-in wifi and rtl8187, which is the awush036.
