View Full Version : Problem after updating... (File Manager in GUI)

File browsing fails in GUI. Click HOME, DESKTOP, DOCUMENTS, DOWNLOADS, MUSIC, PICTURES, VIDEOS, or COMPUTER from the places pull down menu and it opens chirp and displays a message saying " Error reporting is enabled: If you wish to disable this feature you may do so in the help menu." Also Desktop Icons vanished.

If I click BROWSE Network says no application is registered as handling this file. Whats the fix for that?

How do I re-register the correct apps to these?? It shouldn't be opening chirp and browse network now has nothing associated with it by the looks of the error message!

Please Help..
and thanks.

I am experiencing a similar issue;

after reinstalling latest VMWare 64bit version and doing

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

The "Places" dropdown menu opens the locations with Disk Usage Analyzer.
File manager nowhere to be seen anymore...

EDIT
Well a solution was posted online elsewhere but OP forgot to update his post here I guess..

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/58296319/i-cant-install-nautilus-in-kali-because-of-a-conflicting-dependency

wget http://ftp.br.debian.org/debian/pool/main/g/gnome-desktop3/libgnome-desktop-3-18_3.34.1-1_amd64.deb

wget http://ftp.br.debian.org/debian/pool/main/g/gnome-desktop3/gnome-desktop3-data_3.34.1-1_all.deb

dpkg -i gnome-desktop3-data_3.34.1-1_all.deb

dpkg -i libgnome-desktop-3-18_3.34.1-1_amd64.deb

apt install nautilus

The above has been tested on vmware image and can confirm it fixed my issues in any case.

well spoke too soon, after another update today the icons on the desktop are invisible again. i do still have the file menu and can use that to see the desktop items in the folder view but can't actually see them on the desktop. this is rather frustrating as i like to put things on the desktop and access them there out of convenience.

i tried running the steps mentioned above again and it did not bring the icons back this time.

after another update tonight my dsektop items are missing again. re-running the commands above does not bring them back. i still have the folder view and can see and access my desktop items from there but is a tedious and unnecessary step to get to items that should be showing up on my desktop.

For me this issue is still present. Gnome-desktop and libgnome-desktop version 3.18 has been installed earlier from Kali repositories, but it did not fix the issue. Is the issues still appearing with other users?

I'm glad to see it's not just me....
My Home, Desktop, ..., Computer under Places all launch Visual Studio Code, and I get the 'Failed to launch "Browse Network" error.

well I just updated again, and now when I try to go to Places, Home through Computer, I get, "Error reporting is enabled. If you wish to disable this feature you may do so in the Help menu (ok)".

I was able to restore the PLACES functionality by simply running:

apt install nautilus
