Dual booting setups should always be preformed carefully, after you have preformed a full backup of all your important data. In this article we will we installing Kali Linux alongside an installation of Windows 7 which is currently taking up 100% of the disk space.

First I saved sensitive data in windows on an external drive. Then rebooted, poped in the iso-dvd and booted it as live.

Well inside of Kali I used gparted to resized my hdd as instucted. Saved and rebooted again.

This time I chose the graphical installation instead of live. Followed the instuctions as in the "Installation to Harddrive" with exception when it came to choosing partion as explained in "Dual booting with Windows".

The installation went fine uptil "use network mirrors" (not sure if the title is correct of that part of the installation). Here it wouldn't accept any of my choices on what mirror to use. Just returned to me as an error. So I just tried them all specific for my country and region. But still nothing. Then it hit me, maybe my wireless card was deactivated during this step. (still not sure?) Anyhow, in with the network cable and I rechose my firsthand mirror. And all continued as nothing had happend.

Later when it came to install grub. The installation prompted me and asked if any or all of my existing installed OS was present above: "Windows(vista loader), Windows(vista loader), and Windows(vista loader)". I think I didn't read carefully enough on this part and thought these name are surely correct. Everything else had been pretty much preset in the installation. Then the installation was complete and I was prompted to reboot. So I did.

Well booted up in grub these options were available to me: (Please note that I only have one Windows 7 installation)

*kali
*kali recovery
*windows (vista loader)
*windows (vista loader)
*windows (vista loader)

Ok, let's bring up windows I said to myself. I chose to top windows loader and : BLUE SCREEN. Small freakout and a automated reboot. I chose the second one and BS. Bigger freakout! Tried the third one and was presented with recovery. Hugely relieved. I chose the fix startup and 15 minutes later windows booted perfectly from the first loader option. Then rebooted and logged into kali, perfect boot.

So to sum up I now have three windows loaders: one for normal boot, second=beats me and third=recovery. I tried to change the name of the loaders in grub.cfg beacuse the it doesn't seemed to have a menu.lst but after reboot the change wouldn't be present. Still reading into how to fix the names and what the second windows loader is? But this was my story on troubles installing Kali. Hope it helps someone, and sorry it became longer then originally planned.

Jake, to my knowledge 99% of operating systems INCLUDING Win 7, don't support wireless networking when installing the OS (Win 7 might but it's been awhile so I cannot confirm), however; I do know it's great practice to have WAN disabled during OS install as it's not 100% reliable. It's hardwire or bust on that normally...You are correct in your understanding of why you couldn't reach the mirrors first go-around, it was because you weren't on the network.

As for the deal with your Grub loader....Each one of those "Loaders" you have, means there is some kind of MBR there for either an Operating System or One that was there, MBR's rarely get deleted. Grub detected them and took note of them, so instead of setting you up with a dual boot system, it kind of gave you the ability to have a quadruple boot. :) There is great commercial software that lets you fix and clean that **** up. I use it at my work, it's called "EasyBCD" URL: http://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/ It literally let's you arrange MBR's for all OS's like they were smarties to be eaten. You can clean up the MBR's, rename them, move them to different HD's etc... That's just what I use personally, take it with a grain of salt.

Funny Fact: Win 7 by default installs the MBR to the first "Hard Drive" listed in your BIOS and installs the Operating System wherever you told it too. I recently had to use Easy BCD to move my MBR to my SSD where my Win 7 OS was, because during Kali installation Grub pointed out to me that it was on my Sata III 500 GB Storage HD. Glad, I didn't decide to reformat that drive during the past year I've had my PC. Silly M$.

install went fine and now i'm booting the os for the first time and its asking me for a username and password but whenever I type anything in it says that authentication failed I don't remember being asked to give login credentials during the install, have I done something wrong?

I have an hp Pavilion dv7 running Win 7. Trying to install Kali as a dual boot following the instructions given, free up 30GB of space on the HD for install, but when I go through the process to use the "largest continuous free space", it chooses my USB stick from the Live Install. When I manually select the space I want to use, Kali says it's |unusable". I have 4 "Partitions" in total. Recovery, Win 7, HP_TOOLS, and "SYSTEM". Is it possible it's saying the 30GB of unallocated space is unusable because of the amount of partitions? Is there a way around this without trashing the recovery software (recovery and HP_TOOLS are both part of the "Recovery software")?

To answer your question about wireless, it appears it's not active during the mirror setting stage. As for fixing the mirrors not being found problem, if you connect via ethernet cable and choose the option to add manually, you can add the mirrors from the following mirror list

http://http.kali.org/README.mirrorlist

Just put the full mirror name in the first box at the top, and /kali/ in the box at the bottom.

I can help you out on this and I can answer a few of the other questions here as well. When I started my Kali install on my dual booted machine I was surprised that my disc would not boot under GRUB; There must be some way but at this point I do not know. I did a work-around by booting into windows & erasing the BT5 r3 partitions. I did not format for obvious reasons; NTFS vs. EXT4 journaling. When that was completed the machine would not boot because the MBR was trashed so I booted my window 7 pro CD. (which booted fine.) I selected repair & then advanced options. In that screen I selected the DOS prompt & issued a bootrec /fixmbr & a bootrec /fixboot command and rebooted. Windows was back as usual. Be careful with letting the machine do an auto repair. I made that mistake today, forced the machine down, & had a helluva time getting the win 7 DVD to boot. The Kali disc wouldn't either at that point. OOF-DAH, don't do that IMO. I have a work-around for that too but I'm not going to get into it. After you do this work-around the Kali DVD will boot & and you can have at it.

As for wireless if you noticed in the prompts during networking you could select it. I used my normal ethernet myself but I'm pretty sure you could configurate the net adaptors at that point & use them; just watch for it. I cannot stress it enough to READ everything and not click away until you understand perfectly how Kali installs.

3rd question. Stop & read everything. Yes you were prompted to input a root password. maybe you clicked past it without inputting anything (if that's possible, I don't know.) Maybe it is NULL?

Hello. I had 3 attempts to install at first backtrack then kali. I seem to have a constant problem : when trying to make a dual boot , the installer thinks my whole hard drive is empty. I've tried win7 with backtrack -64 bit win8 with backtrack and now win8 with kali. Why is this happening?

I have this exact same problem. I have grub automatically select my win7 os and after 8 seconds boot win7 unless I intervene and select Kali, which means I have to hang around and press the keyboard each time I boot, kind of defeats the point. Not a massive issue of course but a nuisance none the less. Is there anything I can do to solve this issue please?

I was migrating over from.a similar dualboot, win7 & bt5. what I did is use the suggested usb installer, the first time I tried yumi, but that gave me live options only with no install options. then I used disk management in windows and deleted the partitions that had bt5. left it as unallicated space and booted off the usb. chose graphical install and followed the steps. when it got to partitioning, chose use the use unused space.

I have same problem and i find (in internet, of course) way to fix it:
we need to edit file etc\grub.d\30_otheros

we can find string like this: search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 180c9d7e0c9d5798
and change it like this: search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 180c9d7e0c9d5798

Then run command "sudo update-grub" and error is gone.

I am having a problem that when I try to dual boot my laptop, and install kali after windows 8, it shows the disk as whole disk without partition. But when I use kali withot installing, it shows all the files and again when I do gparted while running kali without installind, it shows as unlocated space. Please help me

Got a problem too, I just installed Kali in Dualboot with Windows 7 and now I can't have any sound when I boot windows and I only have sound when I boot with Kali if I plug external speakers (like headphones). Any ideas???

I am having some difficulty installing Kali on my windows 7 laptop. I have resized the partition and freed up about 45gb for the install i have 3 primary partitions on the disk due to recovery hibernation and OS that came standard with the xps laptop.

I can get all the way to the point of partitioning and choosing the mount points in the install. When i try and setup /boot / and swap it tells me it is unable to mount / at sda partition #5 using the ext4 file system.

I have tried ext3 and ext2 to try and get around this. everytime i get the same error message.

Has anyone else seen this problem. also note that i have used grub to try and create each individual partition i will need for the install and format them to the ext4 file system and when i attempt to install and select mount points i get the same error message.

Read up the thread. Someone has fixed this issue. As for people trying to multiboot on say an HP laptop with factory setup. Here is a quote from a simple google search: "With MBR, you only get 4 primary partitions, and then you must create logical partitions after that, which is frustrating and isn't compatible with certain operating systems." And for Windows 8, it uses a new more secure GUI boot. Duel booting Win7 & 8 is a headache on it's own. If your really set on installing Kali. Make recovery discs on said laptops using given tools by the company or Acronis software, then reformat the whole drive. Set up partitions FIRST. Clean install Windows (Google it), then install Kali using a WIRED connection to your router. OK, I think that solves most the issues I've read. Sorry if it didn't help you.

i recently installed kali on dualboot besides windows 7, the installation went just fine, and kali is working without problems. my only problem is that when i rebooted to go into windows it send me to the GRUB window giving me choices between:
Kali linux
kali linux(recovery)
memorytest
memorytest with some options
memory test with some more options
memorytest with even more options
windows recovery enviroment(loader) (/dev/sda1)
everytime i choose windows i runs the starting windows screen, get to the background of the recovery enviroment, and then reboots the total system sending me back to square one at GRUB

I have that problem too. I try the password(toor) and the one at time of install. Nothing work. Had to get back to win7. The installation went smooth and wireless worked fine. I try to "kali" as username and "toor" but that fail too. Could use help here.

Partitioning for a 80G hard disk.

I have an Asus eee with an 80G HD, currently has XP installed on it, planning to dual boot Win 7 & Kali.

Kali apparently needs 10G, Win 7 about 16G so I was thinking of giving them 10 extra each (i.e. 20 and 26) and then I can play with the rest as needs evolve (D: for windows, LVM volumes ...)

Is this sensible?

I have just tried - and succeed to boot Windows 7 from a Usb 16 gb flash drive on a Dell Vostro 1015-with waik and NT6 FAST INSTALLER.
I now intend to create a bootable external laptop hdd-like I did with Ubuntu 14.04-BUT I also intend to install kali as dual boot on this external so that I can boot either on Win 7 -32 bit home basic-and Kali 64 bit .
Is it possible and in your opinion will it work ?!?!!? EVERYBODY'S OPINION WELCOMED

I have been running Kali from a live USB for about a year and when i tried to install it dual boot with the default Windows 7 OS on the HDD, the install fails at the 39% mark, i have tried formatting the patitions both using gparted as well as using the installer, neither the graphical or text installs work, but the worse part is now when i attempt to load back to my windows boot, nothing happens, the screen goes black and a blinking line appears in the top left, it just stays like that.
Does anyone know how to fix this??

Hello all. I am dual booting Kali Linux v1.07 with Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate on an Acer Travelmate 5744 laptop.

When I first installed the earlier versions of Kali, GRUB recognized the Win OS as 'Windows Vista' and that is how it was displayed in the boot menu.
When I'd click on it, I'd get the message 'error: no argument specified'. Pressing the Enter key would bring me to Windows 7.
However in the recent versions of Kali, this problem has been solved and GRUB recognizes the Win OS as 'Windows 7'.
My problem is that since I've been dist-upgrading, both the 'Windows Vista' and 'Windows 7' entries appear in the boot menu.
How can I remove the 'Windows Vista' entry from the boot menu? Any assistance would be helpful.

Sorry if someone has already asked this questions. I looked through the 4 pages and didn't see it asked. I did the dual boot with Kali and Windows 7. Got through the install no problem, and then I started the Nvidia graphics upgrade that the documentation says to do. I completed all of this:

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get install -y linux-headers-$(uname -r)
apt-get install nvidia-kernel-dkms

On the next line, sed 's/quiet/quiet nouveau.modeset=0/g' -i /etc/default/grub it gave me an error. I don't remember what it was at this time, but it was something about sed being unavailable or not there. So I updated the "update-grub" and did the reboot command. Once it rebooted, I got the boot menu fine, but once it was done with all the (booting maybe) where all the instructions launch, I just get the blinking cursor. Nothing I can do brings up anything. I am able to boot to Windows fine though.
Any thoughts?

Hey guys,

Get through the install just fine. I tried to upgrade the Nvidia drivers like the Kali.org docs say to do and there I am having problems. I get through all of this fine:

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get install -y linux-headers-$(uname -r)
apt-get install nvidia-kernel-dkms

Once I type and enter this line:

sed 's/quiet/quiet nouveau.modeset=0/g' -i /etc/default/grub

It gave me an error like the sed wasn't there or available. So I did this:

update-grub
reboot

It gives me the three options to load fine. Windows will load as normal, but once all the boot config launches, all I get is a black, blank screen with a blinking cursor. All I can do is reboot via ctrl-alt-del. I've waited for minutes thinking it just needed time to load up, but nothing.

Any Thoughts?

Excuse my ignorance but I m a newbie linux user. I try to dualboot Kail 1.08 ISO (burnt on DVD) on an, recently purchased, Asus Laptop. The laptop uses EFI/UEFI like most modern day laptops do. Inside the UEFI is a secureboot option. When I have a secure boot option enabled Kali boot gives an Error and refuses to boot.

After some research on the web it seemed UEFI's Secure Boot was the badguy. I disabled it but now it gave me a black screen only leaving me the possiblity to hard-reset the laptop.

I understood 1.08 had UEFI Secure boot support enabled? I hope someone can shine a light?

Hey Lokifeast, you seem to have a few somewhat unrelated issues going on here at once. you have waited a few days for an answer, so here are some thoughts in regard to your post. You should *probably* be using the Kali 1.09 installer. Preferably from a bootable USB pen/flash drive. Do you have any experience using and configuring Grub? You may (or will) find the easiest way to setup dual boot Kali or any other nix hdd install is to install the winbloat of your choice to the entire drive as sda first. use a partition editor to shrink the partition,moving it foward; to create the necessary space for the linux install afterwards. Use the Kali installer from the usb pendrive to install to the partition sdb and allow it to create the necessary swap partition,etc. When Grub scans the hdd during the Kali HDD installation, Grub will look for other installed operating systems and will detect the windows/and loader installation; but it will also inform you that installation of the Grub bootloader will safely install to the Master Boot Record and allow you to select between the windows loader and Kali. You should then be able to select between 3 options in Grub bootloader. Kali will be the first 2 listed, and your Windows loader will be the third line down. I usually prefer setting up dual boot with 2 seperate physical drives, sda and sdb;but its basically the same config. I set up the sda drive with the other operating system and then switch the jumper on the sda to slave and then connect the Kali installed sdb as master. then install Grub to the master boot record and configure accordingly. neat switching between them without actually rebooting them :)

Network interface configuration in Kali is relatively easy and well documented; but something you probably should tackle once you actually have the system installed,configured, and booting properly.
b|t 5 r3 was very nice but it's probably not going to help you at all to accomplish your current endeavors goal.

First I saved sensitive data in windows on an external drive. Then rebooted, poped in the iso-dvd and booted it as live.

Well inside of Kali I used gparted to resized my hdd as instucted. Saved and rebooted again.

This time I chose the graphical installation instead of live. Followed the instuctions as in the "Installation to Harddrive" with exception when it came to choosing partion as explained in "Dual booting with Windows".

The installation went fine uptil "use network mirrors" (not sure if the title is correct of that part of the installation). Here it wouldn't accept any of my choices on what mirror to use. Just returned to me as an error. So I just tried them all specific for my country and region. But still nothing. Then it hit me, maybe my wireless card was deactivated during this step. (still not sure?) Anyhow, in with the network cable and I rechose my firsthand mirror. And all continued as nothing had happend.

Later when it came to install grub. The installation prompted me and asked if any or all of my existing installed OS was present above: "Windows(vista loader), Windows(vista loader), and Windows(vista loader)". I think I didn't read carefully enough on this part and thought these name are surely correct. Everything else had been pretty much preset in the installation. Then the installation was complete and I was prompted to reboot. So I did.

Well booted up in grub these options were available to me: (Please note that I only have one Windows 7 installation)

*kali
*kali recovery
*windows (vista loader)
*windows (vista loader)
*windows (vista loader)

Ok, let's bring up windows I said to myself. I chose to top windows loader and : BLUE SCREEN. Small freakout and a automated reboot. I chose the second one and BS. Bigger freakout! Tried the third one and was presented with recovery. Hugely relieved. I chose the fix startup and 15 minutes later windows booted perfectly from the first loader option. Then rebooted and logged into kali, perfect boot.

So to sum up I now have three windows loaders: one for normal boot, second=beats me and third=recovery. I tried to change the name of the loaders in grub.cfg beacuse the it doesn't seemed to have a menu.lst but after reboot the change wouldn't be present. Still reading into how to fix the names and what the second windows loader is? But this was my story on troubles installing Kali. Hope it helps someone, and sorry it became longer then originally planned.

i had win7 already. so using it i deleted a partition and used that free space to install kali.
evrything got installed smoothly and when it came to GRUB installation it even showed win7 also and i installed GRUB also in root.
but now after installation being complete, ejecting the disc and rebooted now all i see is a blank screen with below 2 lines and a blinking cursor

Hello everyone, I'm new in the forum!
Here the facts:
Installed Windows 7ice Extreme on my HDD.
From Windows I resized the OS partition and created a new one for data ad leaved a 40GB free space.
Booted from CD the Graphical Install.
Partitioned manually my free space: 2gb swap and the remaining as logical ext4 with journaling for the OS.
Installed correctly Kali, was asked me to install Grub in the master boot record..I said yes because he saw the Windows Vista(bootloader).
Reboot.
Grub rescue: no such partition.

Now, I'm a beginner so I tryed some methods to recover or fix Grub found in internet, but anything works...
Things that could be (or not..) useful:
In grub rescue:
- ls command gives me: (hd0) (hd0,msdos3) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1) (fd0)
- ls (hd0,3)/ doesn't return any answer...the machine seems to do nothing, completely freezed...after 20 mins->CTRL+ALT+DEL!
- but commands like "set prefix=(hd0,3)/boot/grub" seems to work..no errors...
In live:
- "mount /devs" displays: "mount: can't find devs in /etc/fstab or etc/mtab"..
...trying to continue after all...
- when I try to update GRUB he sais something like "no groups found" and then "Windows Vista(loader) found. done." But no changes.
What went wrong?

i am using win 7 in dell inspiron with 4 gb ram with i5 processor .
i tried burning the iso to a dvd using nero's option data dvd ...
and when i try to boot it from bios its shows a black screen with cursor blinking 3 times and boot into windows..
i then tried mounting it with daemon tools , then used the setup from the file of iso and it made a box to reboot to complete installation and i did that, but when i rebooted it came up with a boot loader of win 7 and kali linux installation completion and went for the installation ... but proceeding the steps it end up with a cd-rom not detected box and i was supposed to abort the installation ..
is there any possible way to fix this....

I don't want to see Grub splash asking me every single time if I want to load Windows or Linux, I want my PC turn on or restart and go directly to Windows but if I set as primary boot my external drive, I select the external HDD where do I have Kali Linux and I'll run Kali Linux.

Solved reinstalling Kali Linux and during the process of grub installation, set the install to 'dev/sdb1' :)

this problems is related to your iso files kali image. download another kali iso img (32 or 64 depends of your system) and preform SHA1Sum check is it OK. If it is not ok, download another one. After that make boot USB or CD and install Kali linux.
or the second problem could be at your kali partition. wipe it and try again instalation

Hello. I joined today. Having Win7 x64 on my SSD and Kali linux intalled on 20gb ext4 partititon on my 750gb HDD and when asked GRUB installed on main SSD.

Problem i have is booting either one of the OS s completly luck. When i start my computer It randomly opens up Grub which i can chose Kali or Win7 and no problem after that. but when i resart the computer or just shutdown and open it up 2 min later I get

when i shutdown via Button on computer and try restarting it half of the time I get grub rescue and half of the time I get Grub menu which works fine and i can boot either of systems. I really dont know why sometimes restarting causes it and sometimes solves it. How can i fix this problem? I searched quite a bit and found fixmbr fix boot to reconfigure Bootloader to just use win7 but I want to dual but without the fear of Grubrescue screen every once in a while.

Finally installed Kali 2.0 and it's awesome.. and just wanted to share this dual boot setup.

This is for dual booting Kali and Windows 7 with a separate TrueCrypt volume partition

I have 3 dynamic partitions: Windows 7 Home Premium, TrueCrypt partition and a blank parition for Kali.

So the steps that I took are the following:

Requirements:

* Get partion wizard manager 4.22 iso and burn it on USB

* Get Kali iso and burn it on DVD
* Backup your TrueCrypt partition

Convert dynamic to basic partition:

* Boot from the USB and convert the dynamic partitions into basic
- Win 7 and blank partitions will be converted to basic w/o erasing it.
- However the truecrypt partition will be wiped out and you will just have to redo TrueCrypt and restore it from your backup later on

* Next boot from the Kali DVD and just select install and follow the instructions. It will detect Win 7 and ask you what partition you want to install Kali on. In my case my blank partition is ready. Once completed it will reboot and you now have the GRUB dual boot menu.

I have imaged my flash drive with the Kali 2.0 .iso file from Rufus, Unetbootin, and Win32DiskImages, and tried on multiple flash drives plugged into multiple USB ports with no luck. When I try to boot from the flash drive, the screen goes blank for a split second, and then it comes back to my BIOS again. I was able to boot from the flash drive when legacy mode (csm) was enabled, and I successfully installed. When I rebooted, there was no GRUB option presented, and I was not able to boot to GRUB from the BIOS.

I really don't know what else to do. I am firmiliar with installing Linux operating systems, and dual-booting is nothing new for me, but I can't seem to get my computer to boot to my flash drive with legacy mode disabled (which in mandatory in my configuration). Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

My best advise is to read post here on forum. Collect all information from post and you will be able to install Kali 2.0 on your UEFI boot system. You have a lot of similar problems there and members solve it.

I have been having difficulty installing Kali Linux to a partition I have set up. I have been trying to install from a usb drive. The usb runs live Linux just fine, it's just I want a more permanent installation. Whenever I try to install, I get an error while the computer tries to detect and mount the usb. It says there is a problem reading data from the cd rom. I have also tried using a cd but it doesn't seem to want to even boot from the cd, because whenever I try, it just boots straight into Windows 7. Any solutions? Is it even possible to install Kali to a partition using the usb drive?

That's probably from an error while installing Linux. Try wiping the partition with Linux on it and make a new usb drive to install from.

Hi folks,

I have a problem, I have Win 7 installed on a SSD 128 GB and I have an HDD runing for my programs.
Now I wanted to install Kali on a seperate SSD also 128 GB.
To do so i unpluged the 2 Win 7 Harddrives so the Kali SSD and the bootloader has nothing to do with them I just one seperate Kali-SSD everything went fine so far, BUT.
After I finished the installation I could run Kali without a Problem but as soon as I pluged the other 2 drives back on I just can start Win when I try to switch the boot SSD to Kali I get the error

"can't access tty; job control turned off "

I dont know how to fix the problem.
While booting I don´t want to be asked wich operating system should be started it should just run Win 7 all the time unless I manuali interupt the boot and switch to Kali.

And everything of the obove would work I just have the problem that Kali dont find the source or somthing.
Is there any way to change sda1 to sda5 or somthing?

When I unplug the Win Drives I can start Kali without any Problems again.

And if you have a solution please go in detail, I´m totaly new to Kali.

In a partitioning method while installation, installer asks you which method do you want to choose:
Guided-use entire disk
Guided-use entire disk and choose LVM
Guided-use entire disk and set up encrypted LVM
Manual

which one are you choosing?

I've installed a dual boot Kali 2016.2 successfully along side windows 7. I worked in both and they were fine (Except the 2nd issue.). Until I put a update in Kali. I've the below issues.

1. After the update, I'm not getting my wireless card to work in Windows. My windows 7 detects my wireless device in device manager. I've reinstalled, disabled/enabled the wireless device, but of no use. "ipconfig" shows that media disconnected. I've added NETDOWN='no' in "/etc/default/halt", but of no effect.

2. The maximum volume in Kali is much lower than that of windows (Both the inbuilt speaker and with an earphone). So to watch a properly ripped video, I have to login to windows, watch it and switch back to kali.

One more thing, I currently have the default graphics driver nouveau. Since I've dual graphics, I want to try the bumblebee. Is there anything I should know or be careful of, before proceeding to that? As I've read at many places, that after installing the nVidia drivers, they were not able to login to their Linux.

System Details:
Lenovo Z50-70
Core i5, 12 GB RAM, 2GB nVidia 820M along with Intel HD graphics.

1. I think there is no connection of kali with your windows while accessing your wifi driver. There might be some other reasons due to which your wireless is not working.
2. For speaker i am not sure about the solution but may be you should play with alsa tools or you can configure it through HDAJackRetask.

I am using nvidia in my lenovo Y50 with the help of this guide and its working fine with regular updates.

Im having trouble because of my gpu I think (ATI Radeon).
It stopped working a couple of months ago in win7 and the pc wouldn't boot so I didn't install the Radeon's drivers and it ran perfectly. Now I think it's the same problem with Kali. I don't really know how can I disable the gpu acceleration , I don't even know much commands in terminal so you guys would really help me if you can cop/paste the instructions step by step. Dual Booting 64 bit Kali 2018.1 with Windows 10. Dual boot works correctly in that I can boot into both OS's, but when trying to connect to WiFi in Kali it won't see my home router or any other nearby networks. If I turn on the WiFi hotspot on my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, it connects straight away so the NIC appears to be working correctly. I thought I read somewhere in the Kali Linux Revealed book that due to the nature of Kali and what it is used for, the WiFi is disabled by default as a security measure but that doesn't add up if it will connect to my phone.

**EDIT**

If the laptop is connected via Ethernet the WiFi NIC finds the AP with no issues and will even allow me to enter the security key but it seems to drop it as soon as the cable is pulled.

Can anyone provide any assistance at all or even let me know whether this is the correct post to ask this type of question?

Honest I checked all other posts and can't find one matching my problem. I have an ASUS X551M notebook w/Windows 8.1 that I want to eventually convert WHOLLY to Kali but for now I wish to dual boot (Kali and Windows 8.1). Following a post in another install thread How to Install Kali Linux to Hard Disk I ran Mini Tool Partition Wizard in Windows and resized the 500 GB Window partition to 400 GB leaving 100 GB for Kali install. I successfully installed 2018.1 from DVD with the installer finding the 100 GB free space I had created (yes I know the word partition means something different in Windows vs Linux so I'll avoid using that word). I accepted the partition defaults and all grub-related MBR settings. The installer ended with kicking out the DVD disk and prompting me to reboot. I did so, hit CMOS (F2 on my ASUS notebook) and found only two options- Windows Management and the Matshashit DVD drive so I selected Windows Management. I don't see the GRUB boot loader menu when it boots, it just boots to Windows 8.1. Mini Tool sees the partitions created by the Kali install. Per an earlier post in this thread I have downloaded and installed EasyBCD but I don't know what I am doing with it. I accessed the Help for it and am reading the BIOS/MBR Boot Process docs on neosmart.net but I am not sure how to go about configuring the MBR via that tool or by other means so that I see the GRUB boot loader menu when booting via Windows Management. I have confirmed that yes post-Kali install I can boot to Live Kali successfully via the DVD that I burned the 2018.1 Kali image to (the same one I ran the install from). Any ideas? I presume this should be something simple but presently it is escaping me. Thanks in advance for any assistance!

am chasing this down so to speak. I found sda1 to be EFI above no? I can run the command mount /dev/sda1 /mnt but can't run any of the mount --bind commands - output is no mount point exists. Also commands grub-install and update-grub don't exist (command not found). Scrolling down on the thread I tried the sudo commands however "sudo mount /dev/sda1/ /mnt/boot/efi'" outputs mount point doesn't exist (all previous commands worked) my barely educated guess is without /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot/efi not working I can't continue? I'll stop for now, please chime in anyone with ideas. Thank you!

Thank you _defalt! I have read page 1 of that thread (there are 41 pages) Am I to follow the steps outlined at the top of the thread or elsewhere? At the top of the thread there are bind and mount commands but in the middle there is a grub-install which if I run I see "command not found"

hello everyone, I have installed kali on my 2nd ssd but it isn't bootable through UEFI boot system.
on my 1st ssd I have win 7 + grub2.
All works fine but only through grub I can choose which O.S start up.
But now I'd like to make ssd with kali bootable, and than remove grub from my 1st ssd.
can anyone suggest me some tutorial to do this without destroying the two O.S?

In my first drive /dev/sda1 I have Seven o.s. (it's a ssd disk).
In my second drive (a new ssd disk) I have kali, partitioned as follow:
/dev/sdb1 ext4
/dev/sdb2 extended
/dev/sdb5 linux-swap


Kali can only started through grub2, and this last is installed on the partition of first drive.
If I try to start Kali from UEFI bios (canc+F8 keys) the screen is all black and the cursor remain blinking.
Now, my questions are:
1 Why isn't Kali on second disk bootable?
2 How can I make it bootable?

I got this error "Failed to determine codename for release."I abort the installation. Back to windows. Go to Disk Management. Delete the disk volume and set again the partition for Kali.I tried to go back to Kali installation via bootable device. But I got the same problem again. What should I do? Thanks so much :)

I install EasyBCD on windows.. but still cannot boot Kali Linux.. When booting to Kali i get "grub4dos 0.4.6a"..

I installed two Kali linux dual boot on two different Dell Latitude PCs.

On the first PC the installation was successful

On the other PC I'm totally stuck. I really need your help!

Installation procedure :

1. on the first blue screen.
> I made the choice "Graphical installation"

2. The two and third screens are black, with error messages

(*) Sorry my transcription of the error messages is not very precise but they scroll super fast.

3. the blue screens follow one another to the one to choose the partition

What I have done:

I changed boot sequences from UEFI to Legacy.

I have spent hours about to give up. One problem after another with install Kali dual boot. After many failed attempts due to 1. Unable find install media [solved] then unable find LAN adapter [SOLVED ( trial and error )] now that it is finally installed ( I think? ) there is no GRUB so I have no way to boot into Kali.

Why are all other linux distros so easy and Kali so frustrating?

How can I get GRUB to work or do I have to just wipe partition and try all over again...?

use advanced start up option and start in text mode, it cannot find the UUID of your Kali install, you'll need to update your fstab file and point it at your Kali install location..

when in text mode, you'll have a shell and can update Grub from there..

Windows 8 is now 'end of life' and will receive no more updates from Microsoft, so you really should update it..

Anyway.. Windows is the problem with dual booting Linux because it wants to be the only OS on your system..
