I've tried following the steps on the instructions, however have been unsuccessful. As an alternative I've created a disc image of the Kali ISO on the USB. When I look at the drive it says "Kali Live", however when I boot up it gives me no boot menu.

Can anyone spot from the limited information what I'm doing wrong? Would be grateful for any advice - have been trying different methods for a few days now.

i have the same problem. I noticed that he is unable to read the /cdrom/dist/stable/Release file. I used the amd64 image.
I also tried to extract the Files from the ISO but it seems to be currupt and i had a sha1sum mismatch. I will now try to download again and hope that this will work.

Yes I'm in the process of doing the exact same thing you are and am having the exact same experience. I recognized that if I did a 'quick format' and selected NTFS I didn't get the same problem when I went through the process using pendrive. I formatted it to NTFS then clicked the 'format disk' option in linux pendrive.

Ok so you've created a disc image of the Kali ISO on the USB. I'm gathering that you simply saved the Kali ISO to the USB am I correct? If so, that is why it isn't working. You need to make your USB bootable. First, download a brand new ISO and save it to your computer. Second, right click on your USB and select 'format'. Do a 'quick format' of the USB to NTFS. Next, Download this software http://www.pendrivelinux.com/ and go through the installation process. You'll be asked what type of operating system you'd like to install. Select 'Kali Linux'. Next you'll need to navigate to the place on your computer where you downloaded the ISO. Next select the drive of your USB and click the 'format disk' check box. Once everything is filled in properly, hit 'create' and it will make a bootable Kali Linux USB.

I'm assuming you're running Windows so here's what you'll do next to get your computer to boot from the USB rather than your default drive. Depending on which version of Windows you use, the process is different for doing so. You'll need to google how to change the bios of the Windows OS you're using. Alternatively, 'search' your computer for 'bios', advanced system setting or something similar will pop up. Double click that, then indicate you'd like 'advanced start-up'. Then it will restart your computer, before it loads keep clicking F2, or F12 (it will depend on your version of OS) and you will be loaded into bios. From there you'll need to move your USB to the top of the list of your boot order, then disable UEFI, it will change to legacy after you save and exit. Once you do it will again restart your system. Click f12 before it loads then select your USB as the drive you'd like to boot into and it will do so. This instructions might be a little confusing so first attempt them then reply back with any questions I will help you.

I've installed Kali Linux in a USB and I had no problem with the installation. However, it doesn't detect my wireless connection. I'm pretty new with Linux and I followed several tutorials to see how to solve this but I can't fix it. I have installed a previous version of Kali in a VM before and I never had this problem. Has anyone had the same problem? Maybe I should try to install another version? I hope that someone can help me with this. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I have this same issue with my '13 Mac. I used "Pendrivelinux USB installer".

Boots and works great but doesn't detect wireless on my mac, no issues when used in pc.

NIC is broadcom, brcm4360.

Yes! I did $dd if=.... of .... bs=1M with my 8G usb stick~...
So I reboot my computer into Kali linux ...
Then I use $ apt-get update && apt-get upgrade to upgrade kali~
Finally the partition memory is not enough ....
I $fdisk -l it... and the partition only has 2.7 or 2.9G i forgot...

Hello All,

I had to join the forums here because I am at a loss. I can usually always find my answers with Google, forums, etc. but, this is one of those rare times I am exhausted my search skills (or lack of maybe). I have been using a "prebuilt" Kali VB (VirtualBox) iso for a year or so now and love using Kali Linux but I decided I would create a Live USB to see if maybe I would have less driver issues than using Kali inside of VB in Win10 (which is dual-boot on a MacBook Pro). So, with all that being said, I guess I should be grateful I didn't have more issues.
Anyway, I seem to be one of the VERY few that have an issue with no network available on my Kali Live USB. The Live USB itself I have had no problems with, just the missing network or no "eth0" under ifconfig. So, because I am using a MacBook Pro, there of course is no ethernet port that I can plug into so that I can get my Broadcom wireless drivers installed onto the Live USB. I actually just ordered a "USB to ethernet hub" so that I can plug into if I need it in the future but it doesn't help me now. I am wondering if I can open the UUI thumb drive from my Mac or Win10 and insert the drivers I have downloaded from which I can access once inside of Kali? Or, if there is something I am missing, that may be right in front of my face... like, a command I haven't tried that will give me access to the network. I have tried "service network-manager start" and it does nothing. It may be simple but like I said, the prebuilt VB iso I've been using had everything set up already and now I am having to set it up on my own so I'm lost. Sorry for the long explanation and thanks for your time in advance.

- Since waiting for this post to "post", I have done some more searching and have found other commands to see if I can discover a resolution. I have attempted to edit /etc/network/interfaces in order to add (auto eth0) lines but that doesn't help. Additionally, when I reboot, the files are back to original and all of my edits are gone (yes, the edits were saved and I was in persistence). Another thing I have tried is entering "lspci -vvv |grep -A 10 -i net" and all of my MacBooks's Broadcom wireless card info is there. I just need to find a way to get Kali to see it or, well, activate it.

after upgrade 2016.1 problems with aircrack-ng not showing any connected clients...wifite and reaver stuck on same pin so I decided fresh install of kali rolling .iso with unetbootin. Unetbootin would not display my downloaded .iso image no matter what dir it is in, I did not experience this issue with kali 2.0 so now i am stuck install kali 2.0 then upgrade or keep trying install .iso on usb ?

I had same problem...reformat disk...copy iso but very beginning yow will see something about perserving data for mulit boots in ubunta... so just in case...10mb shoud do...boot to live...look for install kali in program dir...I had other issues though relating to unetbootin not finding kali .iso

Like others here I'm having issues with installing Kali (2016.1) to a flash drive. I've read through this thread but still don't know enough so I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

First I followed the directions from http://docs.kali.org/downloading/kali-linux-live-usb-install to use Win32-Disk-Imager to write to a flash drive under Windows. But Win32-Disk-Imager doesn't seem to find .ISO files when I point it at them. It can see .IMG files, but it ignores .ISO files!

So I tried firing up Kali from my Live DVD and doing an install to flash drive that way. The install seemed to be going well, but after the progress bar was about 75% complete (nearly an hour after I started the install), it aborted saying that the step in the install failed. There was no other info about what had gone wrong. I tried again and it failed again, only much faster this time.

I wanted to run Kali for the SDR programs (Software Defined Radio) that I heard were on it. It took a while to understand that these programs were not on the Live disc but had to be added after Kali was installed. Otherwise I would have been happy to start with the Live DVD and would not need to install to flash. No space on this system or clean way to add a second hard drive, so installing to flash seemed my best bet, but I'm not sure what my next step should be to try to get Kali installed.

I'm a pretty experienced computer user, but not a strong Linux user. If giving help, assume that I would benefit from clear and detailed instructions in navigating the Linux directory structure or making any edits in Linux if that turns out to be needed to get the install done. Thanks.

When I try to boot kali linux with a usb I either get a black screen or a messege saying "Secure Boot Violation [Invalid signature detected. Check secure boot policy in setup]".

Win32Disk Imager, I believe works best with .img, so try UNetbootin for your .iso.

I am a Computer Information Systems college student. Very new to Kali as I have only watched someone demonstrate it's power briefly. I want a live USB to investigate it's tools and become familiar with the operating system. However, I have been very unsuccessful at creating a live USB. I am running windows 10 currently, I am booting in UEFI, and I tried recently to use Rufus to write to the USB. I have verified the checksums and they are all correct. Secure Boot is disabled but, I just can't seem to get it to work. I don't even get a boot from USB option when I F12 to boot options. If someone could help me out that would be greatly appreciated.

After using Win32DiskInstaller I get the message, "USB needs to be formatted before use" junk! I keep getting this message and when I try and boot. Computer doesn't even recognize a USB device to boot from. I am using UEFI and secure boot is disabled. I verified the checksums and everything matches. Please help, anyone!

Hello I have a toshiba satellite L850-I2011, I was hoping to dualboot windows 7 and kali linux 2016.1 rolling edition so, I followed the instructions on kali website and when i booted from usb to do the gparted thing it gave me an error gnome display manager dosen't work. I have an amd graphic card. So,I don't know what to do and i dont want to take risk because around a week ago I was trying to do the same thing and it formatted my local disk c as ext4 file so i had to format my hard drive than start over. Fortunately I recovered my data through DRW and I want to do it again

I got a frustrating issue with the latest iso (2016.01-kernel 4.5) when imaging to USB. I am not imaging the iso directly instead I install it in virtualbox vm. Configure it to my own need then convert it to raw and then imaging to USB using dd but booting failed where /sbin/init could not be found, it seems that the /dev/sda1 partition is mounting in a different mount point than / but I cannot figure out what is the issue. Could not find any clue with Google so I am asking forums for help. Anyone seen this issue already ?? Note when imaging the 2016.1 iso directly to USB in live or persistence it is fine and same procedure done with kali iso from end of last year (kernel 4.0) booted correctly also.

I was able to install Kali Linux live USB and set up a persistence partition. While doing the updates it seems to hang on an IPv6 addressconf netdevup saying the link is not ready. How can I fix this? It boots just fine still from the Kali live version and I have network connectivity.

I've done the USB install of 2016.1 on Windows and from in Kali Live, with and without persistence, it all works great.

Except, every install changes the partition size to 2.66GB, not enough room to run updates, it crashes every time. How do I expand this partition? I've tried GParted and it says that boot partition is not available, regardless if I'm booted to it, or another install. I've taken the USB to Win7 and Win10 and can't change the partition. If I wipe the USB and create new 10GB partition, the install process puts it back to 2.66.

How do I allow updates on a USB Live install if I can't expand this partition?

Just got a HP Chromebook 11-2200na which I'd like to use for Kali. I'm having issues with the Live USB boot though. The 11-2200na is a Celeron Processor but when trying to boot the Kali Linux 64 bit image, I just get 1 low beep. So i tried the Arm image for HP Chromebooks and on this I get a black screen but nothing happens.

When troubleshooting this if I do a sudo cgpt show /dev/sda on the intel image I get the warning below but if run the same command on an ARM image, everything looks ok. I've tried Win32Diskimager and dd to write the images. Both give me the same results. As a test, I installed Kali with Crouton and that works fine and incidently uses the AMD64 bit image. Unfortunately, Doing it this way. There isn't enough space to install all the tools that I want. I don't really want to overwrite ChromeOS as I quite like the option of just whipping out my Chromebook and being online in 10 seconds :-)

I have kali 2016.1 on live usb...and when I boot to usb there in no install option nor in programs, there use to be a install kali in menu but it is not there on kali 2016.1. I want to install kali to my hard drive ?

I have installed three different versions of kali linux and each time is different.I downloaded iso then use unetbootin and live-install to copy iso to usb. Usb fires up and run kali fine but thre is no install option on boot. So last but not least i tried dd from command-line and that worked ! Now have a bootable usb with install option.

Good day. I face with some problem. I have a 16GB Flash Drive USB 3.0. When I install Kali there is 4GB memory use and 11GB memory free (without file system). I use persistent encryption version and I can't to resize the partition. I need it because have no free space for upgrade and kali-linux-full install. I try Gpated and Acronis Disk Doctor. I am having a persistence problem. I went through the steps of creating the partition, formating it, mounting it, placing the .conf file everything without an error. The problem is, when i boot with persistence, there is no persistence. When i boot into kali normally, i get the persistence partition on my desktop, yet no persistence. Anyone know what i did wrong?

Attempting to install 32 bit non-PAE Kali 2.0 (built using instructions on site for custom ISO) on an Acer Aspire One ZA3 (0751h) netbook, circa 2010. Put ISO on an 8gb thumb drive, and the Acer boots flawlessly to the thumb drive. However, usability is poor due to read/write speed of using "live" distro on USB 2.0, so I wanted to install to the internal HDD, which is currently a SATA II SSD (240gb). Install from USB seems to go without a hitch, but I get a few concerning messages and the install hangs with a "Started update UTMP about System RunLevel changes" or something like that. The first message I was concerned about was related to "failed to find cpu0 device node".

Why does it boot and work off USB, but after install it's broken? I'm assuming that the Atom Z520 does not support PAE, and that's why I'm using the i586 kernel custom live-build to try to install Kali on this machine.

To be honest, I might even be better off using LXLE or XFCE-based builds instead of Debian, for less resource usage, but if I can't get this to install then I'm not going to go thru the trouble of doing another live-build for LXLE/XFCE. BTW, I'm no Linux expert.....

Hi, I am trying to boot kali from live usb according to the documentation article (I use Ubuntu). The dd command goes through well, but when I try to boot, the usb either doesn't show up in the UEFI menu at all, or it shows up but after selecting nothing happens (literally, there's nothing on the screen and it doesn't make any boot progress).

I tried different flash drives (16GB USB2.0 and 64GB USB3.0), different kali images (2016.1 and 2016.2, of course with verified sha1sum) and different blocksizes for dd (512k and 1024k), but nothing worked. I am able to boot other operating systems (Ubuntu for example) from live usb though. I also tried the Ubuntu live-usb-creator.

So, am I missing some point? Can I change anything else about the dd command to make it work? Do I need some UEFI settings for this? Thanks in advance!

I am trying to make a Kali USB installer. Objective is to either install Kali on the Dell Laptop or run it from the USB.

Currently I have a mac operational and downloaded the .iso file. Got a 128 GB USB.

When I follow the steps from the article :

after the sudo command on mac terminal it asks for the password and "toor" or "changeme" does not work.

stuck here, if any one know the password or suggest any alternate steps to make a USB installer on mac which I can use on a Dell laptop.

I attempted to install Kali from USB on Windows 10 UEFI. I turned off Secure Boot and Fast Boot. I put ISO on 32gb sandisk usb using Rufus (tried with all 3 options regarding efi). I am able to see the usb drive in boot screen but when I select it to boot to screen goes black for one second then it is back at the boot screen. I select it again and then it boots into Windows 10 even though I selected the usb. This happens with all attempts even downloading another separate copy of kali. I install to legacy boot and it installs just fine. What is wrong with my efi attempts? Need to be able to boot to both OS.

Im also trying to create a bootable USB drive. Im using a PNY 64GB USB 3.0 and a Gorilla 64GB 2.0 drive. Ive downloaded the iso version of Kali 2016.2 onto a Systems76 laptop running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS using the dd command from the help page, http://docs.kali.org/downloading/kali-linux-live-usb-install. Im getting this error message "dd: error writing '/dev/sbd': No space left on device." Ive checked the USB and it is showing that there is 64GB on both devices.

ON the other hand I was able to create a bootable USB using my MAC but when I try to boot from it it says there is no bootable media. I could really use some help.

I got this figured out, used a disk manager program and reset my USB to a Master Bootable and MS-DOS and now both have working copies of Kali.

I just bought a new Lenovo N22 Intel Celeron 1.6GHz
4gb, 32GB eMMC

It had Windows 10 on it, but I bought this for Kali Linux only. I can run Kali live from my USB no problem. I also have installed Kali on my mac w/virtual box.

When I wiped the Lenovo and installed it, everything installed ok. But when I reboot it goes to the boot menu asking me which drive I want to boot from: The hard drive or Windows Boot Manager and of course neither of those work.

When I look at the hard drive in through linux terminal, it appears everything is there even GRUB. But for some reason GRUB is not kicking in.

I've restarted and reinstalled about a dozen times the last two days. Could grub be in the wrong location, am I partitioning the disk work or something??? I'm lost here. Any suggestions?

And by the way, windows 10 is gone and I have no way to get it back but I don't care... just FYI.

first , i suggest you to burn supergrubdisk2 and try to boot using this one time boot menu. then you will be sure if kali is setted up correctly or not.
Then if yes once in kali edit the grub config to make it work(with supergrubdisk2 you can saw the code for the working input, so take a picture and reproduce it)

I was following many tutorials, but there is no persistance.conf file like in other tutorials. Should I try to make bootable USB stick? In my case, I have looked at the tutorial and created the bootable USB stick using the specified command: dd if = kali-live.iso of =/dev/sdc bs = 512.

Restarted my computer and I boot from pendrive, he said that the translation into Portuguese was incomplete and in time to "load the data from the cd" (as he says also in Debian), said that "no kernel module was found".

In my case, I have looked at the tutorial and created the bootable USB stick using the specified command: dd if = kali-live.iso of =/dev/sdc bs = 512.

Restarted my computer and I boot from pendrive, he said that the translation into Portuguese was incomplete and in time to "load the data from the cd" (as he says also in Debian), said that "no kernel module was found".

Hello guys, I got a problem can you help me ? I've just destroy 2 USB key by trying to make my kali .iso bootable with Win32DiskImager. Hey All just wanted to get some insight with a problem getting Kali Linux to boot up in persistent mode. I've gone through the direct website of Kali to setup a live USB using a SanDisk CZ48 32gb 3.0usb and the ISO seems to get on and I know that the persistent folder is made but when I boot into the persistent option from the boot menu screen I get a Kernel panic error ---[ end Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! exit code=0x000000200 ] --- My computer then freezes and I have to power it off, after doing this the first couple of times it would boot in and I could work in the persistent mode but then it just stopped working and I would only get the kernel panic error. Don't have a different computer to check but my specs:
Lenovo Yoga 700 14ISK, CPU Intel® Core™ i5-6200U CPU @ 2.30GHz × 4, Graphics: Intel® HD Graphics 520 (Skylake GT2), OS-Type Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS 64-bit, SSD 43.5gb(partition of my ubuntu) also have windows 10 partitioned as main part of :C drive.

I hope I posted enough info basically just keep getting Kernel panic error when booting into persistent version of Kali Linux and can't figure out if my laptop is not compatible or I just have some setting wrong.

Greetings! I made a bootable USB of 8GiB via a Blackarch and Xferience script using dd to create it, but once I installed the ISO image, which is the newest 17.1 x64 Mate, I see Kali listed on the screen with the rest of the three other partitions! I then click on Kali, but contrary to version 16.1 Rolling I get a shell screen which demands a login and password and also expecting commands instead of the GUI starting screen with all the programs and the Mate desktop environment! How do I get past this issue?

I think the setup should have a disk space check code as I didn't realize that it requires 20gb free space and I tried to install it in 10gb drive so it should say that this much space is not enough.

I'm having this same issue. I've got the USB set up for a Persistent Live install of Kali, however once I click on that option at the boot up menu, it runs some of the automated text and then the screen goes black and the monitor loses video feed. I'm using the 64 bit .iso and plan on trying the 32 bit version once I get off work. If anyone else can provide some information it would be greatly appreciated. I've also tried playing with BIOS settings but I can't seem to find one that makes a difference.

Hello, unfortunately I am having a similar problem as these gentleman. I originally used tried using win32, but it would recognize my Kali ISO file. So i switched to YUMI, which is an amazing program. I downloaded Linux Mint , and Kali onto it. I successfully installed Mint onto one hard drive flawlessly. I successfully live booted Kali just to check it out. Now when i went to actually install Kali on my other ssd, everything works in graphical install up until it tries to recognize my 'cdrom'. It fails, I watched all the youtube videos on it and of course read around here on the forums. I went into the shell, tried to create a mkdir etc.. I finally got that method to work, then it gave me another error. back to square one. I also tried removing my usb and re inserting . That also failed. I have a feeling it is because of yumi. Is there a better live usb program, one that most people have work for them? Thank you in advance

After the install, I get an "ACPI error: could not enable powerbutton event", also says "trying to get vblank count for disabled" twice, then a "reg 00000000 save 00000000", then "kvm: disabled by bios", then "dell_smm_humon: unable to get SMM Dell signature"

It's just stuck on that screen.

AABoyels posted a question but I see no answer for it... I am experiencing a similar problem. I followed the tutorial provided, but when I boot Kali it takes me to the boot menu... I actually wanted to run it live bit when I click on it it shows a loading message ( to quick for me to read ) and then nothing happens. I then tried installing it using all three installing options and I always get stuck at the step where it asks for a disk in the cdrom... Can someone please help me... It would be great if both problems could be solved...

Hello there!

I have a problem booting a KALI x64 iso (latest) on a new Notebook that only supports UEFI. When I boot it (disabled save boot), I only get a black screen with a white "-" or "_" sign in the bottom right corner -it is not blinking so I guess it is not a cursor.

When I replace the efi/boot/* files on the stick with files from another image which I can successfully boot, then this *.efi is executed and runs (though of course fails to further boot as other files are missing) - I just did this to check if the efi folder is scanned and contents executed by the UEFI.

So I think something is not working correctly with the bootx64.efi or what it wants to do.

I also tried various options in Rufus on Windows to copy the iso to the usb stick. Namely MBR/GPT FAT32/NTFS - I either dont get any booting at all or I get the same result (black screen with "-" in lower right corner).

I also tried copying another bootable ISO to the same stick - which works, so the stick itself is running fine as it is.

Any ideas what I can do to troubleshoot this?

I ask this question, because I have a Kali live USB AMD64 and it works perfectly on PCs with AMD but it's impossible to boot on PCs with Intel :p

AMD64 is a instruction set..(and obviously it is made by AMD.)....but that does not mean it wont's run on 64-bit Intel processors......:)

I'm having an issue with installing Kali to unallocated space from USB to dualboot with my Windows machine. I get to the part to choose which drive I want to install Kali on, and it's only showing my USB drive. It doesn't show any of my Windows drives, even my unallocated drive doesn't show up. Does anyone know why, or be able to piint me in the right direction? I've been running Kali in a VM and love it so much that I want to install it permanently on a drive. I'm new to dual booting at this point...any help is greatly appreciated!

Here is some additional info:
* I was able to successfully make the flash drive bootable. I haven't really tested it but I followed the process in the article related to the above one and when I type fdisk -l I get this:

I need your help.
Tried to install Kali 2019.1a on USB for dual boot with Macbook pro 2017.
From some reason during the boot the screen is scrambled and after Kali loads the cursor and keyboard are disabled. Connecting an external keyboard doesn't seem to work.
Any ideas?

Rufus and a couple of others seem to use their own method of creating a bootable flash.
I found if you DD the Kali ISO to the USB drive it does not hunt for the CD during the
installation to a hard disk.

When I boot the usb, I press enter to do the live startup. I see a black square for a second and then a lot of text. After that my screen turns black and nothing happends.?

Hey guys, I just tried a persistent install on USB and followed all the directions for a persistent partition. Ive checked, and there is indeed an 11 gb persistence partition, so that all worked fine. The issue is that apt tries to put all of my updates, upgrades, and installs into the Kali Live partition, which is only 4 GB, and it runs out of space before I can even finish my first apt-get upgrade. How can I tell it to install all that stuff into the persistent partition that has plenty of space?

@bitkas It's probably because you are burning image in DD mode. Windows doesn't recognise the unformatted partition of kali live so it throws a warning. You can ignore it. Does it boot?

I would like to have Kali Live installed on USB, and then add an application to it (namely, KeepassX).
I thought I could install Kali Live to USB using the standard procedure (dd iso image), add the partition for the persistence, boot with persistence and then apt-get update && apt-get install keepassx .

I am trying to dual boot kali and i downloaded this ISO Kali Linux ASUS Chrombook (Minnie) (https://images.offensive-security.com/arm-images/kali-linux-2019.4-veyron.img.xz) on my 64gb usb thinking it should work on my ASUS chromebook C423 but i want to use a live usb or partion it if needed and dual boot cuz i don't want to override my chrome os and be able too switch back and forth between boots is there a suggested process can i use the ISO i downloaded for this device? and whats the tutorial? did i download the right ISO??? any help would be appreciated.

My advice for anyone wanting live boot or with persistence is that 1) you can burn the iso on USB via universal USB with windows if you want to go that route.. but to make the partition for persistence you need to be in Linux using gparted.. spent the better part of a day the other day trying multiple things as various attempts none worked until I came across a post where someone mentioned that.. tried it and boom it worked.. so use two USB with kali and load the one you want with persistence in gparted make the partition with format ext4 ... apply the partition .. and reboot in persistence with the newly partitioned USB and make the commands mkdir -p /mnt/kali etc ...
Mount /dev/sdba /mnt/kali
Echo ?/ union? > /mnt/kali/persistence.conf
umount /dev/sdba

Reboot make a test folder in desktop .. note when u umount the persistence drive should disappear if not hit the command again and reboot it should not be there any more.. make a test file or folder on desktop reboot and check if it?s there still or not..

Anyone has questions feel free to shoot me a pm ... I?m no pro but I went through quite a bit of trials and errors myself this week I?m confident to help out as needed if needed.

So - I have installed CentOS, Ubuntu, and other kernels via a USB before, however I am trying to get Kali Linux on my laptop, and I can't get around the same error message.

When I hit 'F12' for the Boot Menu, I select USB Storage Device under LEGACY BOOT. (If I click on UEFI: Veratim, I get taken to the GNU menu).

Then I get the basic Kali Boot Menu
-> I go to Graphical Install (English, USA, American English), and then comes the hurdle.

I get a message on the DETECT AND MOUNT INSTALLATION MEDIA.

"Your installation couldn't be mounted. When installing from CD-ROM, this probably means that the disk was not in the drive. If so you can insert it and try again. Retry mounting installation media?"

Steps I've tried.
1. Unplugging, waiting, and plugging back in the USB drive.

It usually goes up live but when I click to install in any mode be graphic or text my video unconfigures all and I can not install. if i change the laptop bios to legacy i can install it normally. I would like to install it in uefi mode. in my uefi mode I already leave secure boot disabled.

i've downloaded amd64 kali linux and used the provided ls-creator then tried to boot ...after choosing usb key from boot menu instead it boots from the hdd (starting windows )
then i put default boot from usb tried again but nothing changed ( my current windows is a 64 bit and have a good rig ...an msi mobo z87...f that matter ) ....but then i took that usb stick and pluged it to another desktop (running 32 bit windows 7) and boot from usb WORKS smoothly so obviously the prob is in my computer but i dont know what the **** it is
i used my computer (64 bit) to download and create the usb
any help???ideas??

I've gone through the process of making and encrypted persistence drive so many different times on multiple USB drives and even on an SD card. I would usually give the persistence storage 13 or 27 gb of storage depending on the size of the drive (16gb or 32gb) yet about 3 minutes into apt-get update it tells me there is no space left on device, which is strage considering it is only downloading files that are a couple of mb in size. I did a test using the df command to see if my storage is actually being used or not and when I look at it, it shows that "/" and "run/live/persistence/sde3" use% is increasing every second or 2 with no sign of what might actually be using it. After a couple of minutes the drive would be completely full and I cant create folders or download anything using the terminal. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong here, Please!

After some boots kali was beginning to asks a kali password.
I go to cli mode (ctrl+alt+F1) and change kali password without problems (sudo passwd kali). It's strange, because in login screen a system ask me it and in cli mode I cant that.
After change password I enter my new password and screen not crying, that my password isn't correct, but a login screen is beginning restarting itself after entering login/pass and ask me login and pass again. A similar one and after restart kali os.

So hey.. A fourteen year old trying to get acquainted with pentesting here.
I was experiencing an issue with bootable media. I have an SD card that I use for storing my files and apps from my Android Tab and decided to partition it to install Kali and use it. I created a partition roughly half the size of my SD card (which is 64 GB) for my files from my tab and created another partition for Kali. I then installed UNETBOOTIN on my Windows 10 laptop, and used it to create a bootable USB with the latest ISO. But when I reboot my laptop, I don't see my USB in the BIOS options.
How can I fix this?

Hello everyone, hope you are all doing well in these odd times.

I'm having trouble setting up persistence on my usb:

I installed Kali linux onto my 64gb usb, I partitioned 20gb for kali linux and the rest for persistence named "persistence" as ext4.

The commands I inputted into the Terminal:

fdisk -l

mkdir -p /mnt/portable/

mount /dev/sdb2 /mnt/portable

Returns:
FUSE exfat 1.3.0
WARN: volume was not unmounted cleanly.

echo "/ union > /mnt/portable/persistence.conf

I went onto the desktop after this command, clicked the "places" tab, clicked 41GB VOLUME (no idea why it isn't called persistence) and double clicked persistence.conf

Back in the Terminal:

umount /dev/sdb2 && reboot

Rebooted Kali linux and none of the temporary folders are saved so clearly persistence failed.

Checked and read the Kali linux installation guide and typed in the terminal:

mkfs.ext3 -L persistence /dev/sdb2 (not sdb3).

This pops up:

/dev/sdb2 contains a exfat file system
Proceed anyway? (y,N)

I press y and continue and this pops up:

/dev/sdb2 is mounted; will not make a filesystem here!

What am I doing wrong? I've been following many youtube videos which are all similar except some create the persistence within Kali linux.

Any help would be appreciated thank you.

Anyways, everything seems to be going perfectly normal during the installation. But when I reach the "partition disks" part, errors begin to occur. First of all there are 5 partitions which look like the following:

I have booted from live persistence. But I freeze after some time desktop shows approx 4-5 min. I have install update or upgrade both. But still it does not run successful. Is anyone running into the issue of KALI endless reboot on USB?
After Kali settles, it takes inly 2 min for it to restart again in the middle of anything. I found a quick patch to work it out by it is not a concrete solution. Somehow running the apt-get update/upgrade stops this issue, but has anyone found out if those applied upgrades can be already found in some kali dist available? I have used the latest dist. from the kali website and still. Btw using a Lenovo Legion. Thx

Looks like you have already added a swap partition, probably from trying to install kali previously.. Swap is your kali CPU space which is more than you even have in the first place. If i was you id go into windows and creat a partition of 50 or 75gs. Delete the swap space and merge it to your 50 to 75gs.

Then boot kali installer from usb install and when it comes to partition part, select biggest continuous free space and follow guide. You should only have a swap space of around 4gs. But make sure the initial swap swap file was infact from a previous failed kali install.

But honestly if you can't figure that out i would stick to using kali live with persistence. You won't be tech savy enough to benefit from having a dual boot version. Anything you would want to do you can do using kali live and at this point your just going to be learning how to use it anyways. That's just my 2 cents.

There's no need to only use 4g. What you need to do after DLing live is make the rest of your free space persistence. So if kali live is 2.6g then you'll have roughly 5.4g left. And if using rufus you can leave that free space blank and no need to format. You'll do that in the steps using kali instruction. Then you can boot into kali live and follow instructions on kali documents page on making a persistent usb. It'll be step that starts with this, " Next, create an ext3 file system in the partition and label it persistence." But remember when doing it this way the free space you created using rufus probably won't be /dev/sdb3... I think it usually is sdb2. You'll have to look to make sure. Google how to see partitions using kali or something.

I am trying to set up Kali Linux with persistence on a usb. I have had consistent success with booting it all up, as well as partitioning the drive. My issue is two fold. First, I?m still unclear on whether persistence is to be used on the live Kali Linux image, or on the installer. Second, on the live version, I made it through the mounting of the correct partition onto a new directory, and adding a persistence configuration file. It all works there. But when I unmount and reboot, voila, my stuff isn?t saved, the directory is gone. I also created a test nano file and it also wasn?t saved. Any thoughts? Thanks guys.

How can I fix this? My presumption is that I messed up the partitions of the HD in some way.... any way to fix it?

Last night i start the instalation of Kali Linux 20 ( the latest version which was available last night) into my macbook pro 2012 from an usb disk

I want to mention i don?t know nothing about instalation procedures or how to use the sistem i just followed a youtube tutorial i?m new on this and i just want to start learning ethical hacking using kali linux

I know is gonna sound stupid but..:

Everything works fine till i get to the moment when i supposed to thick what tools i wanted to be installed in and after i thick all of them i couldn?t move the downd key to the ?continue? button anymore and i get stuck by 10 mins i couldn?t go back and my track pad was not working till i install the driver i suppose.

After those 10 mins past i decided ti start everything from the beginning thinking if i will force shut down the machine and i will open again into boot mode maybe i will be able this time to move into the ?continue? button and finish the instalation

When start my laptop it takes me straight to GRUB 2.04 version

I tried some fixing methods found on forums but nothing work probably because the instalation not been finished or forced intrerupted .

I am willing to pay for my mistake

I would really appreaciate and open for a reward if somebody will be able to offer a solution for my problem

You should save important files and just re-do kali with new weekly image...so much faster and easier. Then you can install and update stuff Right after without errors and of course you’re kernel will be upgraded!!

Hello everyone.

I tried installing a live ISO on a USB stick to not compromise the rest of my files, however, it went a bit wrong.
The problem is that I ran the installation file and after rebooting my computer (following the steps it instructed me), it showed me a dual boot screen as shown in the attached image.
If I select the second option, it detects the second OS as Windows, and gives me back a bunch of errors

Question: I have no idea what is going wrong.... I have downloaded Kali Live iso (2020.3) numerous times have verified it. Flash it to USB using Etcher with no problem (multiple USB's to make sure it wasn't the USB). My problem is when I go to dual boot it says the USB device is locked for security reasons; it will not load Kali live at all and just defaults back to my primary OS (Mint). What am i doing wrong?

I am running into some issues trying to flash Kali to a USB drive with persistence, and I was hoping someone on here might be able to point me to where I'm messing up.

1) I go through the flashing process using Etcher.
2) Etcher completes validation but then posts an error that the flash failed.
3) I boot to Kali but when prompted for credentials the defaults listed on the kali webpage don't work.
4) I wipe the usb drive, flash again using Etcher but skip validation.
5) I boot to Kali and don't get a prompt for credentials. I'm taken straight to the desktop and things appear to work.
6) I follow the instructions on the persistence page (https://www.kali.org/docs/usb/kali-linux-live-usb-persistence/), but get the following error when I run the command parted /dev/sdb mkpart primary ${start}MiB $end
Information: You may need to update /etc/fstab.

Any thoughts about what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance!

though tried with emergency login struck because root account locked and it did not even boot into graphical ui . Just booting into complete black screen and no keys working clt+alt+f1/f2 .. etc .

The USB Drive will boot to a Live version flawlessly, but when I try to install from the USB, the installer complains that I don't have the disc in the DVD drive. But when I tried to boot from flash bootloader just doesn't show my usb in list of bootable disks. What should I do?

The M1 does not support booting from a USB device just yet. There is still quite a bit of kernel work before Linux will be booting properly without user intervention.

Is it just me or is the "Live" Image NOT meant to be installed, hence the name 'Live', when you create your USB, if you are trying to make a Kali-Live bootable drive, use Rufus and add Persistence (storage), otherwise you should be downloading the Kali-Installer Image, not Live, if you are trying to install it on your system. Whether you are planning to Dual-Boot or just run Linux. I have a Flash Drive with Persistence that runs Kali and I have to say it is my favorite way to run it out of all the others I have tried (VM, WSL/2, Dual-Boot).

i'm currently trying to install kali-linux-2021.3a-live-amd64.iso on a MacBook 12" from 2017 running on macos big sur 11.6 with Intel i7 double core 1,4GHz and 16Go of RAM.
When i'm installing as Live i have no problems and it runs perfectly. But as soon as i'm trying to install it properly, because i made some room on my hard drive to install it, either it's in Graphhic Text or start mode, and for graphic it's in every modes (install, expert, automatic), it just freezes as soon as i enter the "chose language".

I made some research on the internet and i just can't find any good solution, the only solutions i saw are in BIOS but there is no BIOS on mac.


So i came here looking for help, hoping that someone could help me.

Had that instang Kali live to hard drive. what I've tried is coming but first thanks for having me.

All is well.until I installed live version to hd. During install I had a failed to install bootloader error...Soni slipped and finished install.started Kali live USB again and changed what was posted on site to fix...pull USB tried to boot from drive. This brought grub, oh **** here we go. Stuck USB back in now it goes to grub and don't boot usb..look at contents of thumb drive and had sime win32 stuff...uh oh... remade live USB...still grub...hmm something changed boot order...can't see to get to bios to change as windows is gone and Kali live won't boot donstuck with grub to fix.. here's where I was...well I don't see an attach button..mayv'be I can cut paste...in next post

Hello all. Thanks for the spot on the bus...lol...anywho, i recently was installing kali on my good friends:

Windows 10 i believe..lol..hate win
i went into windows to rest boot order and did so successfully. I booted the live boot usb with sucess, however the problems came when i went to install to hard drive. The install went well with exception of Failed Bootloader install. So as directed, i skipped and figured if there was a manual fix so be it i could handle that. Well i have been in a mess for two days bound and determine to work it out myself with the plethora of Kali live boot usb installs info on the web...humm man i made a bad call there. NOw i sit now windows as it got far enough to wipe that out and i assume a OS , being Kali live boot on HD but cant boot due to no complete bootloader . As a result, i looked back on the live usb at the files to see if all was good and noticed some win32 **** and i let out an oh ****. oh, i didnt put it there but it appears as a result of not having the boot loader and tying to edit it in myself, which by the way i followed those comands to a t and they gave me an error message and didnt work, it some how wrote win32 stuff to me usb, or i guess its posible to say it may have gotten there during the partitioning process. I dunno...I just know for two days ive tried anythng remote to what i need to get it right. Then today i thought i found my fixand blam, i see why i think it wont boot...grub is there and has been, but boo menu never showed me OS options were boot hard drive or some network thing, none if which worked they loop back to grub2 prompt its only when i pushed escape key did i get a boot menu. However, i wrote a post today but it didnt post it appears on here, so im starting over...lol..i found a command string that i thought would boot the kali from grub2 but heres how it went:

fxs.mod, ufs2.mod, ufs1_be.mod, romfs.mod, procfs.mod, minix3.mod minix3.be.mod....etc...fpor whole page so i assume im missing things i need in boot loadeder. Oh sorry i may say i never been able to live boot anymore either as it seems the boot order got changed back. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated...My buddy needs his laptop for business and i been putting him off..lol Thanks in advance. I'm attempting to introduce Kali from a Live USB, however I have an issue. The USB Drive will boot to a Live form faultlessly, yet when I attempt to introduce from the USB, the installer grumbles that I don't have the plate in the DVD drive. Indeed, obviously I don't- - it should come from the USB drive. Furthermore, I can't move beyond that progression. Anybody having a similar issue?

I created a USB-Stick with Kali-Live and persistance with rufus.
I try to boot, but it doesnt work...
I use an USB-Interface (Tascam). At the boot instance there seems to be a mistake with it.
Should i unplugg the USB interface?
Which option should i use for persistance boot?

What type of system are you attempting to install it onto? Have you Disabled Secure Boot?

Download Rufus and run it.
Select your USB device.
Click SELECT and browse to the Kali Linux 2021 Live ISO you downloaded.
Set a Persistent partition size, in this example, 4GB, though this can be as large as you want depending on your USB size.
Click START.

Failing to Install Kali Linux

I have tried and failed repeatedly to install Kali Linux to formatted USB flash drive ("Kali Linux Live USB Install").

Here are the relevant facts concerning my computer:

Kali Version = kali-linux-2022.1-installer-amd64 (64-bit for Windows 11 desktop environment)
Kali Architecture = 64 bit


Hardware
* Intel NUC i5 (NUC8i5BEH) - x64-based PC - BiOS Mode = UEFI
Bootable USB Drive
* Verbatim 64 GB USM Flash Drive
Network
* Adapter Type = Ethernet 802.3
* IP Address = Not Available (HHCP assigned)
* DHCP Enabled = Yes
* MAC Address = 00:FF:56:DA:C7:E3
* Drives - File System = NTFS
Operating System
* Windows 11 Pro
System Name = DESKTOP-BD8MPU1


The procedure I followed was:
1. Download .iso file (for 64-bit install)
2. Created bootable USB flash drive (using balenaEtcher 1.7.8)
3. Tried to reboot the Intel NUC15 (interrupting during BiOS loading to re-direct boot from flash drive)

First error message = "Image Authorization Fail. System may not boot to this device due to Security Violation. Press Enter key to continue."
Second error message = "Checking Media Presence....Media Present...Start PXE over IPv4." -- at this point this message persists for several minute.
Eventually, the "Boot" screen appears, asking me to "select boot devices".
The options I've tried are as follows:
- UEFI : LAN : PXE IP4 Intel(R) Ethernet Connection (6) I219-V (Windows Boot Manager)
- UEFI : USB : VerbatimSTORE N GO 1100 : PART 1 : OS Boot Loader

Both of these boot devices return the first or second error message above.

This has been a problem which I have been unable to solve with 4 attempts across 5 weeks.

Kindly direct me as to how to complete this install.

I have thoroughly read several pages from this Kali Forum. I have also tried to follow your book "Kali Linux Revealed".

Hello! I recently decided to get into Kali Linux and have attempted to download the system from a flash drive but have encountered so issues. Upon the computer booted up I?m met with the Kali Linux screen prompting to Install but when I click it, it goes black with a single blinking text cursor in the top left corner. Just a quick question about USB Live Boot with encrypted persistence.
According to the documentation here: https://www.kali.org/docs/usb/usb-persistence-encryption/
Step 0x05 says to create a ext3 filesystem.
Why not ext4? It seems that ext4 used to have encryption limitations but seems that's no longer the case(?).
Just got me wondering and figured I'd ask. :)

Run Kali in a VMinstead, to run Kali from USB on any Macbook you need to add several drivers to the image, and yes, its doable, but not straightforward, and you clearly want it to 'just work'

Hello everybody:

This is my first post at this forum. I had been using linux for years (puppy linux especially) , but I tried to start with kali.

I have no problem with the installation in a USB (live version), problems came later, when I tried to start it on persistence.

I started the system from my USB (no problem with this) I chose 'live system with USP persistence`to mantein my changes to configure it the way I want (language, keyboard, wireless card...) but here comes the problem..... Alhough I started choosing USB PERSISTENCE, although wheh I restart or shut down I have marked the option to SAVE SESSION for the next time, although I followed all instructions to make it persisten, IT DOES NOT WORK.

Each time I star I must do all the modifications again. That could be a no important situation (language, keyboard and little more modifications) but is is a big problem, because I tried to configure my wireless card (TL-WN722N) in monitor mode, and I spent a lot of time doing things, but whtn I must restart to apply some changes and recognice card, each time I start, this modifications has dessapeared, because it is not persistent. SESSION IS NOT SAVED ANYWAY.

I tryed to use differents USB hardware, I tryed lots of things installed different KALI distributions (from 2019, 2021 to 2022) but it is impossible to mantein kali in persistence mode.

What can I do? How can I repair? ALL SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOME...... I cant use kali the way I want because it's not persistent and all my modifications dissapear with reboot.

Please, help me .

When you write an ISO image to a USB, it is immutable, an ISO is a complete image, and you cannot change anything on it once it is written.

To get persistence, you would need to create another partition in the remaining space left on your USB drive, and it is this extra partition that can then be set up to 'persist' any changes you make, without any writable room on the USB there is nowhere for any changes to be stored..

I have a HP Pavilion 15-ec2xxx gaming laptop and its by default and fixed with secure boot and no legacy boot option. When I tried to make a barebone kali install it would start for a few seconds and then immediately shut kali down and boot windows. The other way around was to use EFI but the certificate that came with kali by default will not work if you have any suggestions please help.

If you have a gaming laptop, I'm going to assume you have it to play games in Windows, and as a gaming laptop has lotys RAM and a fast CPU why not run it in a VM its less painful..

I wanted to go bare metal cause i wanted a machine that can do a better job in password cracking and also convert my gaming laptop into a high power crack station kinda machine for regular operations using a vm was more than enough but for password cracking, Fuzzing, AI training, etc its not powerful enough

I have been using my live usb with persistence for about 6 months now and I really like my current config. Is it possible to install my setup to disk? There is an option from the live usb to install to hard drive but will it save my configuration?
