"ether: unknown host" error when attempting to change MAC.

I'm getting an error every time I try to change my MAC.

ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig hw ether 00:11:22:33:44:55 - This is where I get the error.

My goal is to write a python program that does this automatically.
