Why does gnome install give us gnome42 and not a stable debian release?

I run gnome as a shell for kali, i'm building a new image and when i run install-kali-desktop-gnome it pulls the newest release down which is yet to be stable for debian based systems. This means no screenshot functionality! how annoying. Why would the repo do that?

How would i go about downloading the last compatible version of gnome? also, why wouldn't kali org bundle gnome already with the default images?
