I'm trying to use an Alfa awus036H through mapped as a usb device in VirtualBox; it shows up in lsusb but not as an interface dmesg | tail shows the following error which I haven't been able to figure out:

    [ 3522.900488] usb 1-2: new full-speed USB device number 6 using ohci_hcd
    [ 3533.121268] usb 1-2: string descriptor 0 read error: -110
    [ 3533.121276] usb 1-2: New USB device found, idVendor=0bda, idProduct=8187
    [ 3533.121277] usb 1-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
    [ 3538.129947] usb 1-2: can't set config #1, error -110

I just barely ordered the same exact alfa card you guys are referring to. I was curious if you had figured out how to get it to show up as an interface dmesg (incase I have the same problem?)

kali 1.0.1 all updates and upgrades installed. 3.7-trunk-amd64 kernel on an hp elitebook 8540p. centrino 4965 works great with iwlwifi out of the box, but trying to install a linksys wusb54g v4 (ralink rt2570 chip) not working. here is the output when we plug in or reload the kernel module:

    Code:

seems to be like the problem mentioned in this post: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fro...el/dthMMtBVhV4

then tried downloading and installing a new driver for the rt2570 and it would not compile:

yes, i have the linux-headers installed for this kernel. unsure why i can't compile this. so i tried getting compat-wireless and compiling, and got this:

So i am basically stuck, and although I could go buy another usb wlan dongle, I want to make this work because it works fine in backtrack5r3(kde64) as well as bugtraq2blackwidow(ubuntu 3.26 based), and I thought it would be a good exercise that would help people if solved in public forum.

Thanks guys for any light you can shed.

I was having this same issue. I applied the patch you linked to, recompiled the kernel, and my rt2500usb adapter works now. I used the instructions for recompiling the kernel here: http://docs.kali.org/development/rec...i-linux-kernel

hi, i'm having dell inspiron laptop,, while installing kali or backtrack 5r3 on it, it is unable to detect any wireless network around it BUT works fine on LAN.
the network adapter available in the laptop are:
    1) Broadcom Virtual Wireless Adapter.
    2) Dell Wireless 1704 802.11b/g/n(2.4GHz).
    3) Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller.

even http://docs.kali.org/troubleshooting...-driver-issues doesn't have anything for me.

now i'm trying kali/backtrack as live from a USB.

please help me why its not detecting any wireless network and how this can be solved because it work fine with other OS.

    thank you.

So I tried everything, on every forum. I have the "right" drivers. I was able to inject packets on my own wifi network, but I was unable to capture the WPA handshake. I filtered the .cap file through wireshark and nothing.......until while airodump-ng was running I ran "iwconfig mon0 channel auto" in another console window. Amost instantly i captured a handshake (which I verified through wireshark) and was able to retrieve my wifi password.

Hope this helps someone as frustrated as I was

I've (successfully) install Kali-mini ISO from DVD but I am experiencing some wireless problems. I hope this is the right spot to post my question. I'll get it out of the way as it is one of those questions I have'nt found fully answered on the forum or/and the solutions posted and researched have either not worked or does not apply to my situation.

Issue: wlan0: error fetching interface information: device not found

Connection used during install of packages: eth0 interface

Other info: wicd is installed and works just fine but no wlan0 devices are detected so it is pretty much useless atm.

Question BCM43142 wireless drivers Issue on kali 1.0.7 kernel 3.14

I just dual-booted kali 1.0.7 kernel 3.14 and i searched everywhere for a solution to make my wireless card bcm43142 work in kali linux, I found some drivers here: http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php , but I didn't know how to make them work, I tried this: http://www.kalilinux.net/community/t...k-in-kali.814/ , but didn't work because it only works on kernel 3.12. HELP ME PLEASE, thank you.

I faced screen flickering issues with default b43 drivers for BCM4331. Screen flickers every few seconds when Wifi is on, no issues when Wifi is switched off.
Replaced the b43 drivers with the STA drivers direct from Broadcom and the flickering was gone.

BCM43142 is supported with the current STA drivers.
    1) Download the file to a USB drive
    2) Follow the steps in the readme

Network Adapter that supports Kali Linux? [10.9.4 Late 2013 Macbook Air?]

    Hello Everyone!

Before I start, I would just like to say:

I am completely new to Kali Linux. So please, don't judge.

I am running Kali linux on a persistence live USB

The machine I am using is an Apple Macbook Air 13'' (Late 2013)

To start off I know that Kali Linux does not support the Wi-fi adapter of 2013 models, and if there are any ways to fix that please let me know (Trust me I've tried quite a lot to fix it but it doesn't work). Now that I got that out of the way may I just ask:
Is there any Wi-fi adapter that supports mac (late 2013 models) and Kali Linux?
If there are please tell me. I've been looking at the Alfa AWUS036NHA and have been wondering if it has any sort of compatibility with my machine. If there are any others (that obviously support injection, and yada yada) please tell me. It would be greatly appreciated .

If you have any suggestions please let me know ASAP...

    Thank You So Much!

    Hi there
i'm having some problem with wifite
    ill explain it now
it all started after installing kali on my laptop. Im newbie in this thing but i've allready managed to penetrate into some wifi.
when I insstalled kali on my laptop my wlan card was OK i was able to connect on wifi to turn on wifite even crack some wep encryptions but problem started when I wanted to use airmon-ng so when I've started under my chipset was something like non-mac 8021 (i dont know exactly) so i was able to turn monitor mode on to see wifi netwroks around me but when i've used airodump-ng when i selected the target after long time it wasnt even then able to catch clients. I'm using broadcom b4312 wlan card laptop(HP 210 mini). after that yesterday i found that it's a wlan driver problem which can be solved. I have followed this site https://wiki.debian.org/wl so I've fixed that. But another problem shows up after starting wifite it says enabling monitor mode on wlan0... done and again same message appears and again and again. That's first problem but I didnt paid some attention on cuz i will not use wifite so much. Another problem shows up when I tried to change mac adrress with macchanger(ifconfig wlan0 down -> macchanger mac=xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx wlan0 ->) here is some photos about my problem please help i dont know what is it

kapoios: I think I had this issue. My Mac Air crashed every time I plugged in the USB. I think, but not 100% sure, was that the issue was due to me having installed the vendor's drivers on the host, in my case my Mac ( OSX ). Remove/Uninstall the drivers from the host and see if that helps. Good Luck.

I have already used this chip with my host to test whether the hardware was faulty or not. It worked great on my host machine for endless time.
The problem I face is that when i plug it in, it works fine for like 5 minutes and then the it stops working at all. Replugging doesn't help, I can use it again for 5 minutes again after I reboot.
I would be glad if someone could help me out please!!!

    FIXED!!!!
    Look at bottom for solution

Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM43224 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 01)
    Booting from a persistent USB

    Injection works perfectly.
I am able to create a monitor interface too.
I can connect perfectly without spoofing.

I spoof my mac address this way:

    Code:
    ifconfig wlan0 down
    macchanger -r wlan0
    ifconfig wlan0 up
I also tried managed mode and it didn't work.

When I try connect to WEP network, it connects but the AP is unable to give me an address.
When I try to connect to WPA network, the network manager prompts me to enter a password, as if the one I had was wrong.

My issue has been fixed in two ways. Macchanger doesn't work, but instead I do:
    Code:
ifconfig wlan0 down hw ether 00:00:00:00:00:01
    ifconfig wlan0 up
    OR

Right click on network manager (top right)
    Edit connections
    Wireless
    Select a connection
    Type in "cloned mac address"

    And it works

OK, I'm done with my patience i had to register and ask for help.
My hardware: Alfa awus036nh with ralink rt3070 chip and integrated ralink 3090.
My problem: i cant access the internet ... it is really strange. I have listed all available wifi networks of the USB adapter, but if i try to connect it wont.
The history: 1. I installed kali 1.0.2 amd64 and everything worked great ... after i perform "apt-get upgrade" the network manager showed that I'm connected, but couldn't access the internet nor my router over the IP 192.168.1.1.
    2. After i got stuck on the 1.0.2 (after "apt-get upgrade") i tried 1.0.3 amd64, and now I'm not able to connect to the wireless at all.

I tried to put wlan0 (my integrated wireless card) down ("ifconfig wlan0 down"), but had no luck ... tried to put eth0 and lo down, but nothing ... i tried everything that i found googling, but there's not much information for Kali out there ATM.

    Hi Alexcreator.
    You can try:

    1)Try to set CRDA:
    Code:
iw reg set <your country code>
    e.g
    Code:
    iw reg set US
it's very weird that dmesg shows you only 5GHz and 60 GHz band frequencies:
    [ 25.830192] cfg80211: (5170000 KHz - 5250000 KHz @ 80000 KHz), (N/A, 2000 mBm)
    [ 25.830194] cfg80211: (5735000 KHz - 5835000 KHz @ 80000 KHz), (N/A, 2000 mBm)
    [ 25.830196] cfg80211: (57240000 KHz - 63720000 KHz @ 2160000 KHz), (N/A, 0 mBm)
if you are unsure try to use world regulatory domain. Kali sets by default the world regulatory domain:
    Code:
    iw reg set 00
    dmesg should look like this:
    Code:
[ 2275.325369] cfg80211: Calling CRDA to update world regulatory domain
[ 2275.327933] cfg80211: Calling CRDA to update world regulatory domain
    [ 2275.330695] cfg80211: World regulatory domain updated:
    [ 2275.330697] cfg80211: DFS Master region: unset
    [ 2275.330698] cfg80211: (start_freq - end_freq @ bandwidth), (max_antenna_gain, max_eirp)
    [ 2275.330700] cfg80211: (2402000 KHz - 2472000 KHz @ 40000 KHz), (N/A, 2000 mBm)
    [ 2275.330701] cfg80211: (2457000 KHz - 2482000 KHz @ 40000 KHz), (N/A, 2000 mBm)
    [ 2275.330702] cfg80211: (2474000 KHz - 2494000 KHz @ 20000 KHz), (N/A, 2000 mBm)
    [ 2275.330704] cfg80211: (5170000 KHz - 5250000 KHz @ 80000 KHz), (N/A, 2000 mBm)
    [ 2275.330705] cfg80211: (5735000 KHz - 5835000 KHz @ 80000 KHz), (N/A, 2000 mBm)
    [ 2275.330706] cfg80211: (57240000 KHz - 63720000 KHz @ 2160000 KHz), (N/A, 0 mBm)
    See?

    2) Look at /etc/network/interfaces file. If there are other then those ones:
    auto lo
    iface lo inet loopback
delete them and restart networking and networkmanager.
    Code:
    service network-manager stop
    service networking stop
    service networking start
    service network-manager start
    3) Try to give a static IP,. Network-manager->Edit connections.
    4) See if you can ping a site. Maybe it's a DNS resolving problem.
If you can't ping any site look at /etc/resolv.conf file and add a DNS server: e.g. OPEN DNS servers:
    Code:
    nameserver 208.67.222.222
    nameserver 208.67.220.220
you can add this also if you set a statip IP to your connection. step 3 above.
    5) Unload and load your wireless NICs driver
    Code:
    modprobe -r <your driver>
    modprobe <your driver>
    6) See your iptables.
    7) Try to use a different wireless NIC.
    8) Have patience

That's all for now. Good luck!

I have to join in, I got Kali running on a MacBookPro 11th Generation w/ USB-Persistence-Stick.
It runs on a Broadcom bcm4311 card and I can do everything with it, Monitor Mode, wireshark, Injectiontest (aireplay-ng -9) but a usual stable wifi connection won't work.

I get disconnected and then there are always three "auth" tries which timeout and then they try again and we are connected.

iw event -t: Connection quality monitor event: RSSI went below threshold.

    Hi All,

I have wireless that works, but it is really slow, and it does not have to do with my internet connection. From the Google Chrome website I am downloading the chrome browser and it states I am only getting 15.5 kb/s this is true not only for the this but pretty much anything else that needs web access. Is this normal behavior? Or any solutions? I have a Broadcom 4322AG 802.11 a/b/g/draft-n built in wifi for my 6930p.

    Thanks

    Hi all,
In first, i hope i'm in the good section for my question, if it's not i apologize.
After three days of web research on web, Debian forum and other linux forum, ect... I didn't find a mean to change the driver of my wireless card which is brcmsmac to b43. The fact that, I have a BCM4313 and on Ubuntu in Settings, we have addional drivers settings allow to do this change which really improve wifi connexion and network detection.
I'm disposed to provide you every information you want if you ask me and i'm sorry for my approximately english.
    Thanks for your time.

    Hi All,

I've read through the troubleshooting guide and still can't seem to work out my issue. My guess at the moment is its a power issue.

I have a Alfa Networks AWUS036H 1MW wireless card which I don't seem to be able to get to work on the latest version of Kali for the Raspberry Pi.

From dmesg everything seems to be fine, in fact the output is the same as the output I get if I plug it into my laptop, which it works on.

    usb 1-1.3.5: Product: RTL8187_Wireless
    usb 1-1.3.5: Manufacturer: Manufacturer_Realtek_RTL8187_
    usb 1-1.3.5: SerialNumber: 00C0CA40CFBC
cfg80211: Calling CRDA to update world regulatory domain
    ieee80211 phy0: Selected rate control algorithm 'minstrel_ht'
    ieee80211 phy0: hwaddr 00:c0:ca:40:cf:bc, RTL8187vB (default) V1 + rtl8225z2, rfkill mask 2
    rtl8187: Customer ID is 0xFF
    Registered led device: rtl8187-phy0::radio
    Registered led device: rtl8187-phy0::tx
    Registered led device: rtl8187-phy0::rx
    rtl8187: wireless switch is on
usbcore: registered new interface driver rtl8187

However when I run ifconfig or iwconfig wlan0 has no wireless extensions. The lights on my card are not on either. So I thought it was a power issue.

I purchased the 'Zipp' usb hub listed last on the list here 'http://elinux.org/RPi_Powered_USB_Hubs' but the same issue exists.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Hi,

I've got a problem reconnecting my device (TP-LINK TL-WN821N version 4, so it is a realtek chip). The first connection after booting works with:

    ifconfig wlan0 up
    wpa_supplicant-B -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -Dwext -iwlan0
    dhclient wlan0
    After shutting down wlan via

    killall wpa_supplicant
    ifconfig wlan0 down
    dhclient -r wlan0
It will never be able to connect again. Only after rebooting my system.

dmesg will contain a message like

    IPv6 (NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready

    Hi,

I have just purchased a new unbranded USB to use on the vmware image I downloaded from the website, as the old belkin wasn't giving me the range I required.

The chipset is a realtek 8191 although when plugged into Vm it displays 8191Su.

I have the linux drivers for this item and have used the install.sh provided (for end users who are not familiar with Linux system) like me and seemed to install ok.

iwconfig lists it as being present but it will not start with airmon-ng start wlan1.

    My Questions are as follows

    1. Is this chipset supported - I have read that it is under the 8192 drivers?
    2. If it is supported - Is there a driver that i can download with instructions pertinent to kali-linux ?
    3. If the above is "don't waste your time" - Is the Atheros AR5008 compatable?

I have downloaded the backports-3.11.6-1 file but cannot get it to install so if there is a glimmer of hope
that this may work could someone help me with the correct syntax to get this installed I am having a
    problem with the ./scripts/driver-select section.

I have today tried the instructions from a livecd 32 bit edition at https://forums.kali.org/archive/index.php/t-127.html but this too failed

Another quick update - after using the dmesg command I have discovered that the usb is using the r8712u: DriverVersion: v7_0.20100831 (don't know if this is relevant) and a msg at the bottom of the list stating ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready.

Somebody please please please help me - this is daein ma heid in!

I am looking for an up-to-date status report on the Realtek RTL8723AE wireless adapter. The last information around was dated the beginning of August. Does anyone know if there is a newer set of driver software for Linux available from Realtek anywhere that ACTUALLY WORKS without having to be bodged?

    Many thanks,
    Mark.

It seems like everyone on here is have just as much trouble as I did (am) with Realtek. From what I have been able to tell so far is that little to none of the rtl based wifi cards work as is. However if you have been using linux long enough, and feel up to it. Most of the cards issues seem to be able to be resolved by ways of rebuilding the kernel. I am still sort of new to linux/Kali myself. I finally figure it out though

So, if you are having an issue with Realtek not working, no monitor mode capability, no interface...etc. The list goes on.. Try checking out https://github.com/chunkeey/rtl8192su for issues with the r8712u module. That's the one that I had and this seems to be the only source of real progress I have been able to find. Someone let me know if they have heard anything otherwise.
As for all other Realtek firmware/driver problems a good place I can think to start would be: http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers That is a link to the device and driver compatibility for all the devices that their kernel covers. For Realtek specifically, check out http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/rtl819x

I realize that this is no quick fix, or even an answer at all for that matter. Hopefully it might save someone a good amount of time. I wish that I could be more helpful. If anyone has questions, I will try to help in any way that I can.
