Question Installing wlan0 on Kali Linux using compact-wireless

    Hi All,

I am new to Kali and I am unable to install compact-wireless-2010-10-26-p to solve wlan0 (no wireless device). Please see the error in the screenshot attached below:

    make_load_deprecated_syntax.jpg

Videos available to install compact-wireless-2010-10-26-p show no error while running "make load"

Any help would be highly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Satishcse

It Sounds like a big headache for nothing...
Compact-wireless is deprecated since a long time, it is now called "backport".
I guess you will have issues to use it with your kernel
And check it out : The version you want to use are from 2010 !
Kali has backport installed with the latest drivers available and for sure also the oldest ones.
What model is your wifi chipset?

that doesn't tell us a lot...but we can see that you have a ralink internal chipset.
could you give us the stdout of
    Code:
    dmesg | grep -i ralink
installing old drivers from 2010 won't work, forget about this, this not the way.
We have to identify correctly the chipset to no what can be done..
I assume that you are not using a virtual machine, because virtual machine doesn't allow you to use internal wifi card.
    cheers

I should have mentioned earlier that I am running Kali 2.0 on VM. I wasn't aware of the fact.

The code you provided didn't return anything.
    Thanks again for you insight.

Can you please suggest which USB wifi adapter I should use?

    Thanks,

Why don't you use live mode instead of buying an extra device?
It is more powerfull than a VM (one system running, not two) and you do not have this kind of limitations :
You can use your wifi internal card as you are running kali linux as if it was installed, just it is not, it is live mode.
You just need a 4GB (or more) USB flash memory and one of this freeware to mount your linux live system.
Everything is explained here : kali linux live usb install
The code you provided didn't return anything.
Maybe my "greping" was not accurate... but if it was it means that the hardware was not even detected.
Can you please suggest which USB wifi adapter I should use?
That's a huge question... basicaly any adapter that is fully compatible with mode monitor and injection.
It is always better if the device has detachable antenna(s).
For low budget I usually recommend tp-link wn722n, it costs around 12€, it has a decent 4dBi antenna and the chipset ar9271 is not bad at all.
If you can invest more money than he reference brand is Alfa Network.
