Can't get GUI after apt dist-upgrade in Virtualbox

Hi,

After updating Kali Rolling today in my Virtualbox Kali I don't get a GUI anymore (I'm using KDE, Kernel is 4.7.5). In addition if I try to reboot via console it hangs endlessly. I tried to reinstall VBox guest additions manually (not using the deb package) without any change.

Workaround:
Boot into previous Kernel 4.6.4, KDE starts as expected.

Any ideas what might be the issue?

I'm still seeing the same issue with the new 4.7.6 kernel and Virtualbox 5.0.28.

I would highly appreciate any hint to find a way using the new kernel.

try reinstalling gnome desktop , probably something went wrong during last upgrade .

apt-get install --reinstall gnome-desktop-environment

if does not work them try dpkg to reconfigure gnome again by :

dpkg-reconfigure gnome-desktop-environment

pedropt, thanks for the hint! It put me to the right direction (I'm using KDE not gnome :

apt-get install --reinstall kde-plasma-desktop
dpkg-reconfigure kde-plasma-desktop

Now it works with the new kernel.
