2016.2 LXDE menu missing

Hi:

Been struggling with this for a few days.

I installed 2016.2 and did a apt-get update, apt-get upgrade and a apt-get dist-upgrade. After dist-upgrade when I click on the menu (bottom left) all I see a "Run" and "Logout". The rest of Kali menu items are gone. I see the .desktop files in /usr/share/applications. But for the life of me I can't get the menu to appear again. I have scoured the boards and found suggestions about deleting the .config and .cache folders and have not been able the get the menu back.

Can you please help. I can consistently reproduce this problem.

I have the same problem even before update/upgrade, but I think they will just say: it is lxde problem and not kali problem. therefore, nobody will answer.
and ubutnu and other forums don't give any solution, they show how to add submenu and app to the menu, but kali has many apps and who will add each app...
there should be the way to show just the main menu and apps should be included. but ... life is hard.

I had a similar problem following an apt-get dist-upgrade to 2017.1 and after logging in if I pressed any icon/link, the mouse/keyboard/screen locked up. So I did the following:

At login press Ctrl + Alt + F4, login with credentials,

next type: apt-get purge kali-linux-full

now: apt-get install kali-linux-full

reboot --reboot


I would suggest also updating and upgrading. After this all links, and programs work 100%.

hello, my name is nurhand1pa, and about 15 minutes ago, I got this problem too. I did upgrade my system and this bug appeared. there's just 2 options in menu list, "Run" and "Logout", so I clicked Run and open terminal, then I type some commands like below;

- apt-get remove --purge kali-menu && apt-get clean
- rm -rf .config/menus
- init 6
- apt-get install kali-menu
- apt-get install kali-linux-full

yes, I got my kali linux menu back. but, the problem is the kali linux tools is gone. they moved to "others" sub-menu. so, what should I do to restore the kali linux tools like normally?
my kali linux tool is now look like this:

So....

I downloaded the latest LXDE kali iso, installed it in a Vmware Workstation. Immediately after boot I do apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade, after another reboot the menu is gone.

The problem is in file /etc/xdg-menu/applications-merged/kali-applications.menu, line 121, in menu name "Network / Port Scanners". The program that generates LXDE menu (/usr/lib/menu-cache/menu-cache-gen) aborts with error "Invalid <Name> tag" due to the '/' in menu name.

Remove the the '/', or replace by other char (e.g. '-') and restart lxpanel fixes the menu.

I can confirm this worked for me. None of the purging did the trick.
I also want to add that my kali-applications.menu resided in /etc/xdg/menus/applications-merged/

I can confirm this worked for me too... i've just deleted the "/" and haven't replace it
