Considering Kali is based on Debian, I'd say use the packege. You can also build it from sources.
Adding other repos to Kali is a bad idea as it will often break it sooner or later.

Yeah, I added the sid repo and it successfully joined. Only thing that don't work so far is 2fa SSH.
I agree about the repos, but figured one package couldn't hurt.
Now to figure out why sssd isn't playing nice with PAM.
