I have been running fine with Kali, but yesterday ran update/upgrade. Subsequently, when restarting after entering credentials kali fell into a bottomless black screen never to emerge. Having tried all the various public advice to no avail, I reinstalled kali. It was fine, and I was able to get in and set things up. (Aside: Even did the log-in-as-root trick to change the terminal font - surely this is fixable?). Anyway, all was well until I again ran update/upgrade on the brand new kali system and it fell into the same black hole.
The same problem occurs whether using VBox 6.1.10 or the latest 6.1.14. I don't know if this is limited to VBox, but it doesn't appear to be a VBox problem.
Any ideas other than the good old Windows "pause updates" tactic?
