Error: no suitable video mode found. Booting in blind mode

I am trying install kali linux on my HP EliteBook Notebook laptop.
After selecting between graphical mode or non-graphical mode, I get an error "error: no suitable video mode found. Booting in blind mode", after which I can only reboot. I've read some posts about making modifications in the grub, but AFAIK I can't access the grub since I hit the error in the very first step of the installation.
I had ubuntu installed on the system, and I can open a live ubuntu installation without any issue.
Is there a way to install kali on my laptop?
