TightVNC not displaying screen

I find that I have to log in using SSH and start the vnc server with the following:

vncserver

which then presents me with something to the effect of:

I can then go to TightVNC where I try to log in to 192.168.1.137:5901.

I get the usual unencrypted warnings etc and after typing in the password I get a screen which looks like this:

basically a patterned background with a huge cross for a cursor.

Can anyone assist with what is wrong here please.
