[MAC] Problem loading Kali Live after completed installation

Laptop: Mid 2010 MacBook
Dual Boot Kali & OSX

After I complete installation, I have to reboot and access Kali Live again and convert the MBR to a hybrid so Apple's EFI can recognize Kali's installation and boot using GRUB. However whenever I start back up into rEFInd via the EFI boot and try booting from the usb, the screen goes black and blinks in the upper left corner. I've had this issue before where if I don't have just the OSX partition and a blank FAT partition, the boot has the same result.

Question TL,DR: How do reboot back into Kali Live after a completed installation without the system hanging so I can convert the MBR to its hybrid?
