to many layers of symbolic links

hi I'm having trouble copying some files from the local windows file-system while running Kali. the file I'm trying to get is C:\WINDOWS\System32\Config\SAM (password hash file) when I attempt to copy the file an error message pops up saying:

"error copying file too many layers of symbolic links" :confused:

I of coarse googled it and learned some basic stuff about symbolic links and hardlinks, but nothing that helped me understand what the problem is. some understanding of the problem as well as possible fixes would be appreciated.
