I don't come here often, but befor I spend $500 I would like to know what you guys think the best
laptop to run kali on and for pentesting, hacking in general. Here are a few I been looking at.
1. Lenovo IdeaPad 320
2. Lenovo ThinkPad T420
3.Acer Aspire E 15
4. Lenovo Y50
If you think another one is better let me know.

A 'best laptop to run kali on' does not exist.
Some people are looking for a workstation to use hashcat, some for a mobile device with long battery life. A bright full hd display can be useful for Kali, too.
I love Thinkpads. The T420 is a well build machine, but it doesn't even provide USB3.0 (not needed for Kali use).
I have a Lenovo ThinkPad L530 that I've been using for years. Serves me well for general security work.
I use Acer aspire E15 its great 4gbs Ram is nice upgradeable to 8 if ya really need to.
Hdmi port
2 2.0 usb ports
1 3.0 usb Port
Battery runs well over 5 hours

Thinkpad T420. Others sound like tablet-like laptops and are generally poorly supported (due to limitations on how they were built).
Agree with Mister_X on tablets...definitely stick with laptops or PCs.

anything ath9k is good. Check out wikidevi for a list of cards.
However, replacing the card isn't always possible and there are sometimes BIOS locks. So go with a USB. Check recommended cards in the FAQ of Aircrack-ng.
I've Aheros USB Wifi but only 2.4 Gz which working fine.
Just awtg new laptop x220 which thinking to replace mini-pci card by two bands
as sometimes not so suitable to use USB pens ....
As for BIOS already have seen web-site as above mentioned tt permit to delete whitelist
and use any card. Have already got advise to use Intel Centrino Advanced-n 6205
which working fine in both bands (2.4 & 5) (Tkx Net Storm)

thus working two bands 2.4 & 5
interesting which Kali image best to install as love Cinnamon shell but no any new 2018.4

notebook working fine with kali
only just one problems tt wifi card Intel Centrino Advanced-n 6205 have power 15 mBt and can't be increased even use REG changing & other commends
to pitty no way seems to get more power ...
I think that Lenovo Thinkpad is the best among the options that you have provided, but I can't guarantee you that there will be no complication in running Linux on this laptop. Also, I want to know your thoughts about wireless dog fence, is it a great alternative to the traditional fence?
lenovo is not really best ... it has firmware from China. Probably keyboard is really good...
acer is a good choice ... and if you really believe in best notebooks - they cost 1.200,- until 1.800,- USD
