Kali booting into black screen

Firstly I know this isn't a Raspberry Pi forum, but it is a Kali Linux one and I need a little help with that. My Raspberry Pi is booting up and presents me with a login box.

After I login all I get is a blank screen with just the cursor and no way to startX.

By the way I'm using my TV as a monitor so I can't get into the boot menu as you would on a laptop to change the video settings.

I've had Despian runnning on both my A & B+ machines without any problems. But I'm not sure what to do now with Kali.

Any help would be much appreciated.
