External Monitor Not Displaying

I am trying to get my external Monitor to display "extended", but it shows up as "Unknown" via HDMI. I have xserver-xorg-video-intel .19 but upgraded to .21 and lost the gui. I rebuilt a 64bit 1.1.0 Kali system to get the gui back, but really need some advice in getting my external monitor to display. I have looked all over, but haven't been able to first identify the exact issue, second correct the issue, so I can extent my monitor (via HDMI) to an external Monitor.
