Kali Linux 2016.2 logging me out after update

Hello. I am running the Kali Linux 2016.2 Release as a virutal machine in Virtualbox (installed from the Virtualbox image). After updating it with apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y, the Kali VM got stuck in the middle of the upgrade. So I closed the VM and restarted it. Now when logging in using the GUI, I get a blank blue screen (no Kali logo). I can go to Applications (there are app titles but no icons), but if I load an app such as terminal or Firefox, I am automatically logged out. I also tried rebooting into recovery mode, where I get a terminal but there is no networking, so I cannot rerun the update. Is there another way to fix this?

i got the same error, after update to kali 2017, i have an intel graphic card.

i don't know what session u are using 'kde or gnome " but i have fixed this problem with installing xfce4 desktop "ugly" with:
apt-get install kali-desktop-xfce
and set the default x-session :
update-alternatives --config x-session-manager
and chose /usr/bin/startxfce4 "like a default session"
but i cant have gnome back
