Trouble typing { and } in VMware Fusion. (Mac)

I am having trouble with typing certain characters, such as { }. I have installed Kali on my Mac using VMware Fusion.
On Kali I've set my keyboard layout to be MacBook/MacBook Pro (intl.) Not the "no dead keys" variant.
I've also tried changing the "Keyboard & Mouse" profile in the vm's settings from "Profile - Default" to "Mac Profile" .

On the Mac side I have to type option + shift + 8 or 9 to type { or }.
I've tried every keyboard modifier combination on Kali but so far I have not been able to type those characters.

Any tips?
