UPDATE: I was able to successfully install Kali this way. My live is still having problems, but the install went off almost flawlessly.

So I've found that rEFInd hangs on syslinux.efi, but if you change syslinux.cfg so that instead of `vesamenu.c32` the default is `menu.c32`, you can get a menu on top of a shell. I still get kernal...
