You could boot kali USB without persistence, run the script on another USB drive.

I do a full install of Kali Light on a hard drive.
I do not use the Kali 2019 VMware Edition.

Check for the program 'Application Finder'.

Are you trying to install on an SD Card?
Why is your subject 'Problem installing a tar.bz2 or tar.gz file' when you downloaded the .iso?
Which .iso did you download?
What system are you using to make a CD? Windows or Linux or Mac?

MX Linux, like Devuan, has xfce as the DE
I had a similar issue.
From login to gui it could take up to 5.5 minutes!
I found if I continually and vigorously move the mouse pointer around the screen, login to gui was faster.
No 'real'...
To clarify...
+ boot to GUI login screen... works
+ type username and password... works
+ click Login then hang
If that is correct then

Checking the following:
Both Gnome and Mate have Tap to Click option.
xfce and light do NOT have Tap to Click option.

In Kali you can zoom_desktop by pressing the Alt key and mouse scrollwheel to the desired size. Then moving the mouse will pan the larger display.
Did you check the checksum on the downloaded iso?
Is the iso in the root ~ path?

What version of kali are you using?
If you want to switch user for the desktop gui,
you need to logout of root and login as username.
I previously outlined how to switch user WITHIN terminal.

To create the account 'username':
adduser username
rufus is Windows only so... I can not use it.
I do like the devs attitude, the faq page is great!
I think this is a known problem and has nothing to do with using dd or gnome-disk-utility to create the bootable USB.

I did NOT edit the simply installed Kali from a USB drive with kali-linux-light-2017.1-amd64.iso
then
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
and checked
sudo find / -iname '*palm_pfp*'
if NOT running root
sudo reboot
otherwise
reboot
