To get out of initramfs type set root=/dev/sdax then reboot the machine. On reboot you will be at the login propmt.

Issue solved, upgrading now. Will post if I get it on 4.4. I had a really good look at the cat /etc/apt/sources.list and in there was the issue. commented out the old stuff update then upgrade.
