What do you mean by "upgrade the VM version itself"?
Update the VMWare Workstation version?

I've performed a dist-upgrade on my Kali VM and everything works fine except for the screen resolution which defaults to 1280x768 instead of 1920x1080.

My setup:
Kali XFCE running inside VMWare...

I think we definitely have something broken with our setup cause I tried with a couple of other installs and everything works just fine.
Now the point is trying to understand what is broken...
