I just used the iso file and booted the vm from that. Typically what I do whenever I want to try various linux distros.

Have you tried redownloading the iso, could just be a bad download? When I had Mint installed on my netbook I was able to open Kali in Virtualbox without a hitch.
No clue as to what I did... But they're both working just fine now... Well as of last night I should say. Computers, gotta love em.
