Install the package icedtea-7-plugin command like:
# apt-get install icedtea-7-plugin
Restart the browser and test here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

The problem was with the code in the gnome menu app. It's all over the place. Muts did a nice job creating a workaround to a gnome problem. You can see this your self if you run the gnome menu app...
Try ALT right click.
This problem has been going on for years across distros. Some solutions work and some don't. Look here for starters..

Try to stay away from tarballs if there are packages available in the repo. It will eventually throw something out of whack.
First, don't worry if you have Java 6 and Java 7 both on your system for now. You can use the command update-alternatives to ensure javac, jdb, jar, etc. etc. are properly linked to their Java 7...
