What must done to get it running on my macbookpro(early 2011)

I am able to run kali through vm ware and then install kali onto a usb drive through vmware and graphic install.
I don't get kali in the boot loader menu.

- should i install the grub boot loader?...

i am trying to install kali on my macbookpro 8.1 through usb as my superdrive is broken, i tried many usb and usb iso tools but in refind when i select to boot from the usb it shows no bootable drive...
