    Glad you got it working.

Yeah, while root is required for most info security work, definitely not something for everyday use.

Never run Kali on anything but a PC or laptop, so I can't say. Since the BackTrack days, I've always made a live DVD/USB, and tried that on the device first, before attempting an install.

Hmm, that's odd. It must be the wifi card, but if that's the case, aircrack usually won't work either.

The way Kali is built doesn't make it suitable for basic home use, in my opinion & experience. As you know, running everything as root is bad.

To get what you need, it sounds like you might...

    No problem :)

The Kali dev team does their best to make sure packages are installed & ready when you setup Kali, so I'm thinking that CouchDB was setup during install.

Since the Galaxy S3 is Android-based, I would assume your chances of compatibility would be better. However, I'd still run Kali live from a USB stick on your device of choice...to see.

First thing I would do is verify the download against the hashes...to make sure your download is good. Assuming the download is ok, I'd try making another bootable USB, on another USB device, to...

Must be something with your laptop's wifi. Do you have another wifi card you can try?

FYI, my best wifi connection is when I'm 3 - 5 meters from the access point...could just be my gear, though.

CouchDB is part of the base Kali install. The couchdb user you see in /etc/passwd is the CouchDB admin.

I've not used CouchDB myself, but I ran dpkg, and the description says "RESTful document...

Hmm, how does your connection work via ethernet from this machine? Have you ruled out any RF interference nearby, which could be messing with your wifi signal?

First thing to verify is that your wireless router & internet connection itself are fine. I assume you're using DHCP to get an IP address? Could you be getting any RF interference which is causing...

Ok, that eliminates some obvious stuff. What happens when you try to curl or wget webpages? You might need to wget a download of Kali for a valid test, if your connection goes down after a couple...

Have you ruled out problems with your ISP, and wireless router?

Anything odd in the output of dmesg, or in /var/log? Can you curl or wget webpages ok?

If this specific card is not listed in the compatibility threads here, I'd check the aircrack-ng forums.

I've not used an antenna-less wi-fi card, but my personal rule is if the chipset is...

While it takes some cooperative store personnel :) I'd put Kali on a USB stick, head to an electronics store, and boot Kali live on the tablet of your choice. That's the best way I know to ensure a...

I'd go with one of the pre-built Kali VMWare images over at offensive-security.com. They also have some directions for use there, too.

    To all,

Have you ruled out any hardware problems (i.e. router, ISP, etc)? Anything nearby causing signal interference?

    No problem!

Good idea, going outside Kali repos is always a risk. Depending on your risk tolerance, you could use Clonezilla to get an image of your machine, then try an install.

Agree with Mister_X on Clonezilla...I use it before a major Kali update, or any time I feel paranoid about an upgrade :)

If you'd like it added to the repo, I'd file a tool request over at bugs.kali.org

You can always manually install it, but if a tool isn't in the repo, there's a good chance it may break something....

You normally don't need to run msfupdate, as the Kali repos keep MSF pretty up to date.

That said, I'm seeing the same error as you. I'd report this bug over at the MSF github page.

First thing I would check is the hashsum, to make sure you got a valid download. Then I'd try install on a different machine, to verify it works & rule out any problems with the USB drive.

I was able to record a command successfully. I didn't use the workspaces command, though. It placed the recorded file in /usr/share/recon-ng.

I have that same model Alfa card, and on a non-VM, it works great. Plug-n-play, like you said.

I'd say the problem is with the VM itself, or VirtualBox. Have you contacted VirtualBox support?
