Custom MariaDB datadir on Kali 2023.1

Hi guys,
I've recently upgraded to Kali 2023.1
After the upgrade, I'm having big troubles with MariaDB using a custom datadir.
Using the default datadir (/var/lib/mysql) all is fine. When I try to set a custom datadir the server is not starting.
I've configured apparmor to allow the access to my datadir - indeed it was the same configuration previously in place, and it was working fine.
Just to be sure that the problem is not with corrupted data, I've tried to move my datadir in the default location, and it works fine - on the first start the data structure is upgraded as it normally happens when upgrading mariadb.
Any ideas?

your new MariaDB needs its config file set up to point to your new directory structure..
