Question ALFA USB Working on the Mac..but not in VM on Windows

    Guys

I have an ALFA AWUS036NEH. I have the Kali running on a vm on my MacBook, and it can monitor and inject perfectly fine. I have been able to work on my test hub no problems at all.

I've been trying to get this working on my Windows machine so I can free up the MacBook for the missus to look at rubbish online etc. But I cannot get the device to work on my Lenovo.

I'm using the same VM image on both systems! I've made sure to try USB 2 and 3 ports, neither work on the Lenovo.

I can see the card, and can get it to apparently sit in monitor mode, but I see no AP's at all when it 'scans'.

Any advice on what I can look for? Much appreciated.

Make sure the card is COMPLETELY disconnected from the host OS and then connect it to the guest OS (Kali) through devices (? Not sure in VM as I use Virtual Box.) After that, make heck to see if Kali is able to see the device by typing either airmon-ng, ifconfig, iwconfig, or lsusb. If you see the card listed there, then you may need to install the drivers but if it works on your mac that shouldn't be te issue. Just make sure it's completely disconnected from the host. Also try running apt-get update and apt-get upgrade to check for and install updates if you havnt already. Good luck!

You can fix this with downloading the wheezy version of firmware-ralink: http://packages.debian.org/wheezy/firmware-ralink

    Then install it with
    Code:
    dpkg -i firmware-ralink_0.36+wheezy.1_all.deb
But this firmware doesn't support monitoring due it is STA.
Also aircrack says the Ralink devices are useless:
Cards with Ralink chipsets should not be your first choice.

So, I suggest: get another dongle.
