Invisible (but functional) Applet Icons ?

I've re-installed twice with the same result. The applets in the notification tray are in visible (such as nm-applet, battery etc), but if I hover over them they work fine.

If I run nm-applet from the command line it will launch another instance (still invisible) but it does give a GTK-WARNING about icon size allocation and I notice the width of the icon is being set to -24.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks much!

I'm using an old gateway laptop and Gnome Classic sessions.

ps Don't have access to the logs here, so I can post if needed later today. Thanks!

I've spent 4 days tracking this down and it seems to be a bug in a gnome classic. I was unable to find a solution and have switched to running Kali with Openbox+Tint2 ... all good now.
