I want to get into Kali but need to complete the basics at first.

Hello, I want to get into Kali Linux, but as a noob I have no idea about anything. I started out watching the Network+ of CBT Nuggets, but dropped it around episode 6 since it was irrelivant to what I actually want to learn. He did explain a lot of stuff, but I don't get anything from knowing a bunch of Internet protocols without knowing what to do with them. I wasn't gonna take the test, so I actually needed something practical to get my hands on, something that I can use or see a use for.

So all I'm asking is if any of you know a book, a video course or any source that is mildly relative to things that you do with Kali. That being Linux and Networking and how they work in general. I can't find anything on the interwebs so I would tank you if you could provide a source that maybe you used when starting out. Thanks in advance.

Vivek Ramachandran's work on securitytube.net is impressive. There's some good videos on how wireless hacking works, etc.. As for Linux and Networking in general, that's pretty broad. The best way I learnt was by installing Ubuntu, and then setting it up as a Web server, then an FTP sever, DNS, DHCP, SSH, Torrent, Proxy, Media, the list goes on. It's a good hands on way to learn this stuff, and there's plenty of guides on how to do it.
    Hope that helps.

Kali and penetration testing in general is not a "basic" discipline. If you are not aware of the protocols, and how they interact with eachother, or how data flows, you can't expect to dive right into the "practical" side of pentesting and Kali use. You maybe should start with something like Ubuntu and complete http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/. You should have a relatively solid linux foundation if you complete that and it is "practical" as you said. As for the networking side of things and protocols etc, they can be dry but they are necessary to learn. You have to walk before you can run.

100% agree. I remember doing Linux From Scratch a few years ago. It's great if you want to REALLY understand how linux as an operating system works.

Packt Publishing do a good range of applied learning books - they cut out the background noise and teach by "doing".
They have some amazing backtrack books - that would apply equally to Kali.

BackTrack 5 Wireless Penetration Testing Beginner's Guide
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/BackTrack-W.../dp/1849515581

    Otherwise:

BackTrack 4: Assuring Security by Penetration Testing
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/BackTrack-As...ds=backtrack+5

For the style of learning that you'd like (it's called Kinaesthetic), default to Packt Publishing or Starch Press rather than "wordy" books where you lose the will to live.
